I graduate in just over 6 months and have been looking into doing this postgrad..
Is it easier doing it in general than for your own animals...
Can a career be made out of it.
Edinburgh Uni do a vet surgeon degree for graduates but I do not want that responsibility... What is the responsibilities like for a vet nurse?

Not a clue (!) but `Mary` on this forum is a vet nurse I believe!

best of luck for your graduation.I am not sure about uk but over here competent vet nurses are in demand and pay very well.I am also able to do thngs like run puppy socialisation and dog training clases as well as help with welping *****es and give advice for breeding etc to make more money. It is definitely much much easier with other peoples animals and you learn to deal with euthanasia after time.the hardest thing is having to euth animals that an owner just doesnt want.that is why i traned as an animal behaviouralist also to give advice re innapropriate soiling etc which often lead to rehoming :)

I looked into doing vetinary nursing after I left school. There are a few schools that do it as a full time course but I never went down that route.

I tried to get a post in a vetinary surgery so I could earn and learn - unfortunatly they were looking for people that had already done a course in biology or something similar. What I found definatly helped though, was getting experience in a vets. Most vets will happily have you helping out the vet nurses for a week, and plus it would look really good on any application, and also gives you a refrence. So get down to your local vets and explain you are thinking of becoming a vet nurse and are looking to volenteer your time.

Good luck!

No I'm not a vet nurse@) Wish I was! I work at a vets as a recepionist but hoping to move 'up' one day.
If you have good grades then I would go for VN. You can if they are a training practise train at the vets. Other wise you go to college, I think you still have to go to collge for a day release. I want to do a ANA course which is a Animal Nurse Assistance, this is a 10 month course then I would go into VN after. I am 40 next year and dont have the grades really to go straight into VN. I would do this at home but you need to be in a curtain work place.
The best thing for you to do first is (depending on what you have done before)
Get some work experance of being in a vets (you may not like the operations?) to see if you likeit.
The best thing is to get your face know.
I went to my vets as work experiance for a week and then asked them if I could help out every wednesday, they said yes! Then a VN was going on holiday for 10 weeks and they asked me if I wanted to help part time and I never left! Been there for 3 years! Sorry for long post but hope that helps!

fact is i will have a degree already so over qualified? And it is Marine Biology with some micro. Seeing the vet this afternoon so may talk to him about it then or if a V|N is on the desk

I don't know if Maryh is still active on here, but it would probably be worth chatting to her. If you cant get hold of her on here, pm me and i'll tell you where to find her. :)

My friend has a zoology degree and went on to be a VN. So as long as you have persistance - sometimes it takes a while to get a placement, you have a good idea of biology, a bit of maths and some hands on animal experience, I don't see why not!
