Hey guys, quite a manic week but manged with the help of a wonderful friend on this forum!
Leeland had a little pee infection a bit ago, but it put her off her food in a big way so we were worried it was more. I started on the oxbow crit care and pestered her with fresh veggies non stop. She was also on baytril and the left overs of DT's metacam for comfort. The vets were concerned that because her mouth was *FINE NO PROBLEMS* it was bladder stones not just cystitis so took her in overnight and gave her an x-ray.
She came back the next day and the vets said she ate fine, her mood was up. We're gonna take her off the meds she's on (2 days before her course was even up!) and they put her on emprid and infacol instead, they also said I was to give 3x2ml of pineapple juice and her crit care to subsidise her veggies and hay. When I got her back... she didnt eat. She also developed a little brown/pink colour on the tip of her tongue (now gone white with a bit sticking off it) but I figured that they had knocked her out to look in her mouth and what with all the scopes... etc.
I took her in for a check up and mentioned that she was not responding to veggies, infact she managed an 1/8th of a grape the day before, her stress levels were up and she was 100% off hay. Critical care was the only thing she was having.. and this is where it turned into a blame circus!

The woman I saw said the reason she is off her food is because I have stressed the crap out of her with excess syringe feeding (I do 20ml's a sesh 4 times a day, then her meds, plus water to rinse) - for the consistency this is the max amount for oxbow per kilo anyway and I'd rather do little and often to keep her gut moving. she said this as she repeatedly got out the pig, put her back, got her out, put her back. I offered to open the carrier so the pig didnt need ripping out every time and she said no. Then she asked if I had metacam left, I said maybe one dose.. she said.. hmm save the stress of the mouth feed I'll inject it instead!
I mentioned the weight fluctuations, that I weighed her every morning before first feed of the day, I also mentioned that some suggest twice a day. She went nuts and said "don't be silly, you wouldnt weigh yourself 3 times a day. You're just worrying yourself". IT'S COMPLETELY DIFFERENT COMPARATIVE PHYSIOLOGY! She must have formed the opinion that I was a hysterical ninny because her following advise was, no mouthfeeding, just throw in LOTS of fresh veg, don't get her out and if you have to make it the once (because the fact that she is more vocal and explorative can also indicate stress?!?!?!?!). Stop all meds.. see you 3 days. I was so concerned that I rang up the operating surgery that kept her straight after, to talk to a different vet that was familiar with the case. She agreed that getting her out would help keep the guts active, but the moment I dropped the the fact I had just seen the short irish woman she said, lets just see how she does. She dropped 40 grams overnight and her eyes were crusted over. I was LIVID.
So I went to the emergency vet the next day and the woman said put her back on the crit care, give her more baytril (for the bleeding that had developed on her tongue, arguably my pipette, her teeth or the myriad of vets who checked her mouth with a scope this 2 weeks) and we'll get an 'exotic' specialist on monday - don't care what he is as long as he knows his pigs. Oh and guess what, the vet I saw the previous day... was the owner of the practice! I nearly curdled.

So since then she's back up 20grams, she's miraculously more compliant on the syringe feed, I've been massaging her tummy to help the food along because she hasnt any gut stimulants, but it works. Her tummy feels full and we have an apt. at 14.30 with village vets. I'm NEVER taking the girls back there for anything more complicated than a pee infection. The guys at the bottom of my road are fast, and a few of them I really like, but that is it.

I feel I should mention.. the woman I saw first was a nice kind pig friendly vet, the second woman who stopped everything was the practice owner, the woman I rang was the nice girl, the emergency vet was another nice woman but different from the prev two.

Lots of vets. I think we saw 4 different people over 5 visits with Leeland this 2 weeks gone!

Glad to hear you and Leeland are getting sorted out and are happy, there's nothing that makes you feel better faster than a vet that you can trust, it really takes a load off your mind to have a good vet -c

UPDATE! New vet just rung, he said that he had NEVER seen this before on a guineapig in all his years! The tongue at the back near the throat was necrotic, it was not her teeth, it was not syringe feeding or anything else. I can go down at 4.30 to look at the tissue he removed before they send it off.

He said the reason she couldn't eat was because the tissue had bulbed up causing her tongue to stick to the throat and to stick out a the front a little. The discoloration on her tongue I guess then is where is wasnt being kept wet and dried up a little.

He has prescribed a whole lot of pain killers, he didn't say anything about antibiotics yet.. he may keep her over night again to keep an eye on her. I really hope so. It just goes to show, that for all the fuss about not wanting to knock her out incase it killed her.. could have ended up killing her. I didn't think twice when they suggested it, even though it crushed me! Thankfully she's made it through.

The problem I have now, is let it heal and reduce crit care, or keep up the crit care to keep on the weight. I'll ask my vet but he said he wanted to see how she reacted to food once she realised she could move her tongue again! That's fine, unless she doesnt feed I suppose! Thoughts?

I think now you have a vet that you trust you can be guided by what they say, if you see what I mean? You'll be confident that the advice they give you will be good, and the best for your piggie. However as the vet has never seen this happen to a guinea pig before, he might have to feel his way as it were, so if something doesn't seem to be working for your piggie, I would let him know and ask for more advice sooner rather than later, so the vet has a chance to change and refine his ideas as you all learn together.
Perhaps some of the other more experienced folk on here (like Furryfriends or Pebble), may have some advice for you, or may even have come across this situation before.
Sending healing vibes in the mean time x>> x>> x>>

Thanks M&F :) I'm in contact with furry friends already, but I think she's had a rough and busy couple of weeks! I messaged her to let her know what happened so if she has time then I'm sure she'll let me know what she thinks, being the queen of guineapig noms!

I've already contacted my previous vet to let them know what we found. I think the more people in general are aware of what can go on in our weird and wonderful little piggies the better!

Sitting tight for 16.10 so I can hightail down there and take a look!

You must be sooooooo nervous! Waiting is horrible :a19: :{ :( 8...

Furryfriends, aka Debbie, helps so many people and piggies, it's amazing, she really is a star x) sorry to hear she's having a hard time at the moment :(

Hopping all the very best for you xoxo

Well, I say hard time.. I'm assuming she is because she lost 2 guineas recently so I know I'd feel pretty trashed. We love you Debbie! x>>

hee hee.. I'm wondering how much I can say that before she calls the police!:))

No but really Debbie, we do!:p

Well what with the worry a while back over the sanctuary coffers and her recent losses I thought she might need a little cheering up, and I had what I thought was a nice idea, so I did it (take a look in announcements bit) :red
So I think you may be safe, as the police will be busy with me inbreeding

haha!

UPDATE!
went to the vets yesterday evening to pick up Leeland. The lump they removed was MASSIVE. It looked like a weird brain. They aren't certain for sure if it's a tumour because he says it looks a bit too weird, and the location on either side of the tongue is unusual.. but whatever it's going for the biopsy I think.

Poor puppy had a slice of the left side of the tongue removed, along with a massive lump from her cheek/neck region. The right hand side had the same problem - where the contact points had fused, but they were not loose so they cortorised (with a device that emmits alpha rays, very rare!) them apart and didn't remove more on that side. The vet is still not happy, and is uncertain what to expect will happen next.

He then showed me photos which I am going to see if I can ask for, so you can all see what happened. The symptoms are so common for teething issues that this was a complete surprise to everyone. Of course he might call keepsies on them being his property and all, but I commented that they may be useful to others on the site if other vets in the country ever get stumped.

She will be going back today for observations and coming back home tonight. I'm at work now so can't remember the name of the main pain killer she is on but I know it's a morphine derivative. She was also allowed a bit of metacam last night.. though I'm not sure she swallowed it. I also gave her a ml of water (mixed with an electrolyte powder than turns the water red!).. it all just came out and seemed to wash the blood out.. but she started to chew and her little tongue looked like it was being chewed on so I stopped. (her tongue is swollen and poking to the left of her incisors). It looks red/ purple! @)

anyway, that's all I have for now on her. Will let you know what they said tonight.

I am so hoping that she starts to make some progress now. I would be really interested to see the pics if you can get them.

A piggie came to me a while ago with dental issues, but on examination, Simon found lots of necrotic tissue in his mouth. Once this was removed and the teeth had been sorted he made outstanding progress and returned home within a few weeks. Following the removal of the tissue he was prescribed the antibiotic zithromax and he was on twice daily metacam.

That sounds exactly the same as Leeland. There's me thinking it was a new medical horror story! I'll let my vet Alan know, maybe he'll want confer with Simon!

oh.. and leeland is home with us now :/ Hoping I can provide just as good care. Vet said not to try critical care just yet, but with mouths healing so fast it shouldnt be long before she's trying food again.. Then I can help her out with crit care.. knowing Leeland she'll probably prefer to the put the weight on on her own!

not happy - she came back without crit care or painkillers. Friend who did taxi service for me today yet to explain why no pain killers came back with her. I'm going to have to ring them tomorrow. She has a fleshy gunk seemingly sticking her tongue to her other side. I dont think she's using her tongue to eat yet. May heal and seperate but I'm concerned that it is a breeding ground for bacteria at the back. Tried to flush mouth with water which she was very cooperative. Wet chin is not dribble - it is due to mouth being washed. This is after I removed some waxy like green/brown gunk from front of tongue.

Vet very busy, will likely get back about photos much later.

Sorry for short hand, just finishing off before going to bed! Night y'all! x

she called for food sort of this morning so I gave her some goodies, but DT came charging in, so the 10 minute I had spare was spent hand feeding. I wrote a vet note because she is back in today, saying she needs help positioning food to bite it effectively. Also about the zithromax/metacam you suggested. I've added allsorts of notes about her feeding habit and about the gunk.

She was disharged with pain relief the day before yesterday, yesterday she was given a shot of the morphine type stuff, but this morning she was in much better spirits, even jumped on top of her house so dont think the pain is as brutal thankfully! My friend is now beating himself over the fact he came home with nothing - apparently the vet was rushed and there was a really noisy dog who Nick couldnt hear the vet over. If it had been me I would have asked him to write down his comments.. I'm going to ring this lunch and get the lowdown, and ask that any extra notes are written down for me :)

Mini update!

Rang the vet an hour ago, he said they were trying to avoid antibios for the time being as this may cause delays in her appetite. He checked the tongue.. it's not stuck, just sore and bruised. He wants her pumping with critical care (in the nice way!) until tomorrow and then he will show me how to give her the painkillers by needle (the reason I have had to bring her in every day).. I think he said it was meloxicam. Not looking forward to it but it's a useful skill so I wont pretend I'm doing her (or anyone else) a favour by NOT learning. Lets just hope I can be as soft as my dentist was with me!

So tonight and tomorrow day will be all about the tasty oxbow crit care and the meloxicam. If I notice no improvement in her mouth by 3/4 days I guess it's antibiotics time. But I'm sure my vet will say something to that effect or better when I see him tomorrow.

Feel terrible today - took Leeland in for her last check up - and for the vet to show me how to inject her antibiotics. They said she was doing great (although she is still only 800gms as apposed to 1.2kg). So I went home, gave her a little bit more crit care and some spinach (she's having to learn how to eat long strands again), popped her away for a few hours. done.

Then at 3.30 I got her out for more leafy veg, crit care and her pain killers. She was struggling to ger the crit care down this time (She doesnt open her mouth wide because her tongue is so painful after the op). So I'm reduced to feeding her 0.3ml a go again. After 20 minutes I notice her right side gut had bloated right out and the left had not! I rang the vet who told me to hightail down incase she was blocked.. she hasnt eaten properly for a few days and with me being stuck at :x work I can't keep my eye on her regularly as I would like, and I have to trust my partner who is too hand shy with them. He will get 5 mls in and think he's upset them too much.

Anyway, got to vets - bloat went down, vet said she probably swallowed air but as there are no poops forthcoming recommended infacol 1ml twice tonight and 4 times tomorrow (1ml) if still no poopery. By the time I rushed her home and popped her away she was absolutely racked, making very sad grumbly noises and could NOT be enticed with any more leaves. Worst of all I was an hour late for work so I had to go straight away! No time for reconciling :( I feel so guilty at all the man handling today and worst of all I am stuck here at work until 6am, and then have to get up at 9am to feed her, 12.00pm feed and jab, 3.30pm feed and painkillers. and 4.30 I am of for another 12 hour shift. I wont survive :(. I don't think I can get a buddy swap and my boss really doesnt care for animals so is completely unsympathetic if I want to leave early. Urgh. I feel stressed, guilty and miserable! Sorry Leeland - your slave sucks!

Is there anybody out there who could help with syringe feeding this piggie? I am just heading out but when I get back I will have a look through my list of syringe feeders and see if there is anyone in your area who could help you. xx

NO Leeland's slave does NOT suck!! DON'T even think it, never mind say it :x

Look how far you've got her! A sucky slave would never have got Leeland this far, a sucky slave would not care enough to be worried sick over her well being.

So take a few deep breaths, have a good cuss at the world in general, and uncaring bosses in particular, maybe even kick something expensive in work, if you think you'll get away with it ;)

Then lets have a think, see what Debbie comes up with, but in the mean time, could you feed Leeland as soon as you come in from work, then get straight off to bed, for a couple of hours, if anyone else could do the next feed (even if they don't do it as well as you do) that gets you couple more hours, which makes the next day just about bearable, put up with that for a few more days and every day Leeland gets a bit better Then plan a few days in bed to catch up, no wine ,no romance, no nookie, just SLEEP, (ok and maybe some chocolate).

Sending Healing Vibes to you both x>> x>>

:)p awww thanks guys.. I think I was having a bit of a meltdown because of the insane rushing around, and then realising I'd only get 3 hours sleep. I have to give her antibiotics by needle you see, as the vet believes baytril will put her off her food and that's counter productive. I did the needle fine, she didn't even squeek, just scrabbled a bit to get out the weigh-basket. I just don't want to be a mess for that.

In good news, I may be able to get home a few hours earlier tonight. So I might get 5 or even 6 hours sleep. And Lee (my man) was able to give her 8mls at 7pm and 8mls and 11pm of crit care.. plus a bit of pepper and both her infacol doses. Because her tongue is so swollen she wont open her mouth as wide, and bites the end of the syringe so you can't push it in. She only allows 0.3mls at a push now before it dribbles back out (the lump they removed was attached to one corner of her lip so she has a downward smile on one side now..).. He's very good to me and helps out alot, but he's not as good on his own so for her sake I prefer to participate if we're both in the house just to speed things up for her.

Thanks Debbie for keeping an eye on us over here in Liverpool. I'm in Aigburth. I do 4 x12hr shifts and then I get 6 off. So after tomorrow night I will be off until Saturday the 20th!I think we might make some decent progress - if she will let us get anything more than a ml in 5 minutes! I'm going to make the mix a tiny bit thicker tomorrow so she gets more nutrients per serving and it doesnt just fall out of her face! haha

Just wish me luck for the antibiotics!
