I have tried to text Vendra from the CCT but have had no reply now and dont think I will as have text twice in the past few weeks. It might be because I am not a member but I cant afford to be until I know there is a vet near by that can do what I need!

Tallulah needs her back teeth trimmed and sorted however I would prefer it to be done without anesthetic, so does anyone know a vet that is cavy savy that will be able to do this for me?

There is a decent vet near me that can do it but she uses anesthetic so would prefer to look around for another first.

I am in Colchester Essex but we will travel a reasonable way (although not too far as the car isnt the best).

Thanks I have posted on Guinea Lynx too.

I think that Vets and Pets in Broxbourne, Herts, do dental work without GA (wherever possible), but you could ring and check. I haven't been there myself but have heard it recommended as they have a resident Rodentologist who runs regular guinea pig clinics so the practise Vet also sees many guineas.

That's the nearest I know of. My Vet is further away (Anne Taylor at Goddard Vet Group, Ewell, Surrey, Tel: 020 8393 6049) but she is very cavy savvy. Thankfully I haven't needed any dental work done on my pigs but wouldn't hesitate to take them there.

There's also Simon Maddock at Cat & Rabbit Vets in Northampton - I haven't been there but he's very highly recommended for piggy dental work and I believe he'd only use GA where absolutely necessary.

It'd be worth asking any local rescues if they know of somewhere more local to you. Good luck x

Just another thought.... Did you know that dental work is carried out for free at the CCT? (I think you'd just have to pay for any medication, if required). At my Vets, just one consultation alone would cost more than the annual CCT membership! If you can get to Huntingdon then I'd seriously consider joining as it may well be more cost effective in the long run, especially if Tallulah needs more than one appointment (as is often the case with dental work). Not sure why Vedra hasn't got back to you but it's a thought x

i text vedra yesterday as i have the same problem and am also in essex. I'm not yet a member at CCT but am joining when i go up on friday. She may just be very busy poor lady didnt get chance to reply to me until 12pm last night.

Been thinking about this some more and just wanted to say, although there are some very experienced and skillful "cavy savvy" Vets dotted around, who are amongst the very best at guinea dental work, just remember that, even under the care of the most skillful of these Vets, it might still not always be possible to carry out all dental treatment without anaesthetic.

This subject was discussed here recently in the following thread:
http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=48129&highlight=dental

I'm no expert and I obviously have no idea about the nature and complexity of the work Tallulah needs. In my personal opinion you are absolutely right to seek out the best person you can, for the best possible chance of successful treatment without GA, and it may well be possible....however you should be aware that there are some occasions when it's not. Don't want to worry you too much, just would hate you to pin all hope on something which may not necessarily be possible (although fingers crossed it is!) x

The previous thread has worried me now :... i am taking Maisie up to see Vedra on friday and was hoping she would definately be able to do it without GA. I will **** not be able to afford her being put out and doubt she would even make it throught it. Dont want her to be PTS.

It wasn't my intention to scaremonger or make anyone unnecessarily worried...really sorry! mallethead I was speaking generally and just wanted to give a bit of balance to the subject as I know the emphasis is often on conscious dentals and this is the expectation we tend to have. Although this is often possible, it sometimes may not be.

From what I hear, Vedra's dedication and commitment to helping poorly piggies is second to none, so Maisie will be in excellent and experienced hands. As I said, I'm no expert and haven't used the CCT myself (but definitely would do, if the need arose), but I'd be very surprised if Vedra can't do Maisie's work without anaesthetic. Her aim will be to help Maisie back to good health and she'll genuinely care about her welfare (almost!) as much as you.

Please don't expect the worst. If it'd make you feel better, perhaps you could ask (around here) about other people's experiences with dental work carried out by Vedra - I'm sure you'll hear lots of success stories and strong recommendations. Just remember that every case is different and Maisie's needs may not be anywhere near as complex or demanding as some of the rare experiences we hear about here. If I were you I'd definitely take Maisie to Vedra but it's natural for you to be anxious because you care so much x

Thank you. She isnt in need of very complex work - her teeth are just slightly too long/curled, however its not something thats effecting her eating yet however she has obvious swelling under her jaw.

I think I might call up the Huntingdon vets and see what can be done. I wont be able to travel that far until after my exams (end of the month) but like I said its not an emergency asuch.

lily_n_dori - I texted her two weeks ago, and then early yesturday and still nothing...what time did you text her?

So if we have to go up there is it a £30 membership and nothing else? I'm confused on cost also with CCT to be honest.

i text her yesterday about 10am then she replied first at 12 ish and then not again until 12 pm. i know she is very busy. are you sure you have the right number? you have to pay £30 for a yearly membership. All dental work is free and nail cutting. Worming 4 times a year and a few other things.

this shows what you get ^

Hopefully you can get an appointment at CCT as i have heard nothing but praise for Vedra. x

I text her about 11am yesturday so hopefully she will text back soon. I have heard nothing but praise but I've also heard of some people never getting a reply via text or email which worries me as Tallulah will need this doing soon, its not an emergency but last night her chewing of pellets was clearly discomforting to her =/

You may need to phone, often a good time is in the morning (I sometimes phone as early as 8 ) or late evening (after 8pm).

I've had a pig who needed dental work frequently for a while, took her to Vedra who got her sorted within a few minutes. Dental issues aren't all plain sailing so you'd be doing the right thing to nip this in the bud before Tallulah gets any worse.

Okay will try that but cant make any arrangements until after exams. Also abit miffed I havent been texted back after texting three times to be honest.

Are you a member of CCT or did you become one after you got a text back?

I am so confused why I havent got a text back - I did say in my text I wasnt a member and that I need to know if there is somewhere near first before I can pay to be one. I am a student and have saved for Tallulah and obviously cant justify parting with £30 of it incase there isnt anyone because then it will take even longer to get money.

i wasnt a member until today, the CCT is in huntington cambridge. It may be a case of being really busy when you have text or maybe the number is not right?

Have you had any luck getting in touch with the CCT yet? I'd be a bit miffed too if I'd texted several times with no reply, so I can fully understand that.

If you're still trying to find out whether or not there are any rodentologists near you, then I think it'd be worth asking your local guinea pig rescues if they have any recommendations as they may well know of someone. Really hope you manage to find someone before it becomes an emergency x

I might try the rescue idea thank you.

Nope no reply yet - I got the number off the website and someone from guinea lynx so definitly right. It could of been a case of being busy but in all honestly I've text three times in 2 weeks - all different times and days etc and lily_n_dori you got a reply when I text the same day and I didnt so god knows why I'm being ignored when I've even added that I would pay to be a member if I was to know :L but glad you got your piggies sorted, just getting more worried about Tallulah now and I dont think she is the kind of pig to cope with anesthetic again to be honest.

I might text once more and see if theres a reply but I cant see it happening now.

Have you tried phoning, Charly?

Vedra gets in excess of over 60 texts a day (according to 2008 newsletter) as well as all the phone calls, emails and appointments. I really can understand what you're saying, I would feel upset too, but I can assure you it will not be anything personal. I'd persevere with phoning. Either text and ask when you can ring, she will then text back with a time you can ring, or keep trying to get through on the phone - you may need to let it ring for a while.

I do suspect the nearest she would have for you is Amir in Broxbourne, Herts.

I've been down this road myself, with lots of asking around. I really don't think there are any piggy experts in Essex.

Good luck to you and Talullah.

I have tried emailing now and hopefully there will be a response, we have tried calling a few times but no answer so I am guessing thats as busy as her texts. I understand she is busy but I am finding it abit hard to understand why out of three texts in 2 weeks there hasnt been a moment to let me know when as shown in this thread others have a response.

I know of one person from Lynx who mailed me to say they had the same problem and actually were never succesful in getting hold of Vendra in two months and so had to go down a different route.

I think that will be what I have to do if there is not a reply to the email.

I cant plan much until after the 25th but if theres no reply by then I might consider her being done under anesthetic as she did come around okay after her spay so hopefully she will come around just as well - and I want to get it done before it effects her weight and to be honest I am running out of time for the delays that seem inevitable from Vendra/CCT - which is fairenough as I'm guessing they dont make a profit/is a sort of charity - but I have to make best decision for Tallulah which is getting treatment soon and I honestly think theres a bigger danger to making her wait than there is of her going under anesthetic right now. Last thing I want to do is wait around for months for a reply and then have to save up for getting there with petrol etc and have her ill by then and it causing problems...whereas if she goes local it can be done byu the 26th or 3rd at latest and she is a good weight so has a good chance with anesthetic.

But saying that I will have to question the vets on their experiance around here first...although they have two that take an interest in guinea pigs and study them in their free time I will want to make sure they have succesful experiance!

I have three possible vets so hoping atleast one has a good track record! Although the one I spoke to seemed to know about it but I never thought to ask.

I totally agree with you. For all that it would be great to use Vedra's services, if it's hard to get an appointment/information, plus the fairly long journey, you'd probably be better going with someone closer to home. I'll be interested to hear who you go with and how you get on, as I'm always on the hunt for good vets, and I'll never be able to travel as far as Broxbourne or Huntingdon.

Good luck whatever you decide Char, I understand your reasoning very well. Do keep us up to date on how she gets on.
