I sadly lost Pappis in August ( we're waiting hopefully for a friend for Demba) Pappis had two dentals under anaesthetic but had she lived, our vet was prepared to do a conscious dental - this was at Abbey Vets in Durham x
My Fred had dental work for two years, my vet is prepared to do conscious dental's and has done on some of my pig's and other's. I opted for him to use a Sedation on my Fred as he is very skittish he doesn't do the freeze approach and we both felt it was necessary.
Long story short my boy went from regular dental's to no dental's. His last dental was two years ago, he had his incisor removed after a nasty jaw abscess.
He's unfortunately not near you as we're in Scotland but I felt I had to share as it shows there are more vets able to treat teeth problems and I wouldn't ever hesitate in agreeing to a Sedation when having dentistry done on my pig.
Hopefully going forward more vets will take an interest in dentistry.
is there a reason this particular piggy needs to have the dental consciously? because if there isn't, there are alot of specialist piggy-savvy vets who are more than highly skilled in dental work but who don't agree with conscious dentals for various reasons (explained if you directly ask them) - i know it is one of those debated subjects but i personally wouldn't rule out using a good vet just because they choose to use a light GA/sedation.
Hi @Stewybus
Yes I agree with @flintstones .
My vet practice is extremely competent when it comes to guinea pigs and rabbits and other small animals.
My particular vet Laura has an interest in soft tissue surgery but her passion is rabbit and rodent medicine, surgery and dentistry (in particular all things Guinea Pig!). Laura is also one of the attending vets for Calderglen Country Park zoo collection.
After many discussions with her she has advised that as animals like guinea pigs become more and more popular then more vets are undertaking up to date qualifications to deal with them. This should make it easier for people to get appropriate treatment and care when needed.
I think it is a case of looking at a practices website for information on each of the vets at that surgery to see what they specialise in and then perhaps ringing them for more information if needed.
I found my vets by a recommendation from a work colleague after telling her that I was unhappy with the 2 vets I had previously used. I am so glad I rang and explained that I was looking for someone who was knowledgeable about rabbits and guinea pigs and found Laura and also Nikki and Elaine who also look after my pets. I would highly recommend my vet practice so I am sure there will be others out there.
Good luck with your search.
I agree with you that's my boys vet also Laura is great with them and she has piggies of her own
Then I overheard her conversation with the receptionist about Fudge and thought no way that cannot be. Anyway after sending Adelle a PM (once she worked out I was not some sort of lunatic stalker
) it turns out that it was her and this is the vet practice she uses also.
