Today i went in to clean my two girl piggies. I happened to look over at Talulah and she just didn't look right. Her chest area was moving with her breathing. Talulah is a long haired piggie so don't normally see it very clearly. I pick her up and was listening to her breathing. It seems to be a bit how do i say noisey on the way in. Not huge but i can hear it with her by my ear. There is no discharge on her nose and she is eating normally. In fact she barreled into the fresh hay i put in for her.

While i was holding her she started making a teeth grinding sound. Now she does do this when i hold her normally but this sounded different from tooth purrs. Wondering if its a sign of a URI on the way. I have a appointment with my vets for tomorrow but wondering if i need to bring it forward to today.

Please have her seen today of that is possible! There is a chance that heaving breathing could be a sign of an acute heart problem other than URI.

It sounds like she may have a Upper Respiratory Infection (URI) and the vet is the best person to tell you. If she is running around happily as you suggest, she will probably be ok until her appointment tomorrow. But keep an eye on her for any decline in her movements etc.

Edit: I've just seen Wiebke's post, she posted it while I was writing this one, I hold her opinions very highly and I missed possibility of a heart problem.

Thank you. She is going to see the normal vet tonight as vet with the most guinea knowledge is not in until tomorrow that's why i was given a appointment for then.

Hopefully she can help and call the other if needed.

Well vet thinks it is the start of a uri. She has given her baytril and have to take her in tomorrow to see the other vet just to make sure nothing else is going on.

Hopefully the vet tomorrow can give you a definite diagnosis. I had a heart pig and her only symptoms were laboured breathing and not eating.
Don't worry about it though as it can be managed. Fingers crossed it is just a uri though x

Has the vet given you probiotics as natural can be harsh on their stomach.Good luck
