Well as most of you know i took the boys for a MOT today at the vets and he said they are in excellent condition and their hearts/lungs are sound and healthy and that they are both healthy! Phew thats good. He was a really good piggy vet and spent his time examining them both. Thank you Lisa and castaway for recommending him, he is fab and i can see how passionate he was about piggys.

But he said they may have a yeast infection? mallethead They have been itching recently and i bathed them on sunday in the coco neem and mankum&neem shampoo, i told the vet this and he said the coco neem my make things worse! He said they do have some dry skin and checked them both thoroughly and said it maybe a yeast infection, so gave me some hibiscrub shampoo and the fun part is that they have to be bathed every 2 days in it! Also i have to make sure the lathe is rinsed out otherwise Joey may turn pink as he is white/ginger and the shampoo is pink and may dye his fur. I'm so confused on how they got it as the vet said its normally linked with using sawdust or from gas heaters, which we dont have and i dont use sawdust! :{ Oh well at least he picked up on it and he confirmed they are both definitely under 2 years old and i said i think they are two next week.:)

I asked about Gizmo's snuffly nose and he said that its due to his nasal passages and its could be two things 1. That before i had him he may have suffered from a URI and it wasnt treated so it has damaged the passages or
2. he just has small passages and said he does have a 'pug dog nose' which is what i thought, I'm so glad he had put my mind at rest and he said his heart was healthy from listening to it and lungs were clear. He said to keep an eye as if it was due to his nasal passages being damaged he may have flare ups and if they cause a problem eg Gizmo stops eating he will give me antibiotics, but hopfully he will be ok as he has been fine since ive had him and hes always had his snuffly nose. :)

I have to go back next Friday for a check up.

I hope they be good for the baths! I'm dreading it as Gizmo hates bathes.rolleyes

Sorry for the long post!

Oh wow sounds like a great vet visit, drat about the possible yeast infection. I hope everything goes swimmingly with the baths every couple of days and that the wee fella doesnt turn pink ;)

Swimmingly is the right word as i normally get soaked when its Gizmo's turn as he just like to jump on me all soaking wet, no matter how i try and keep him there! Joey will also copy if i do Gizmo first!:))

i always get a bath when jake has his bath :)p:)p

Glad the vet trip went well :). Don't envy you with the bathing though!
I am wondering about taking mine in for an MOT as I am sure Willow is sneezing, and I am paranoid about every itch and scratch rolleyes

I must admit when I had to take mine to the vet yesterday for their poor tums it was awful nice knowing they'd had a good once over and had no other problems :)

Glad the vet trip went well! Do you know if your vet does dentals with anaesthesia?

I didnt ask, but i will ask when i go back next Friday and let you know. I did forgot to ask him as i was babbling about Gizmo's nose and then about Joey and how he didnt have any fur when i first had him, he must have thought i was mad. rolleyes

But i have a feeling he may not give them any anaesthetic as he seems to know his stuff and he was very thorougher and checked everything even their front teeth. :)

Redfrock i would recommend taking them for a MOT as like you i worry about everything and I'm glad that my mind has been put at rest about Gizmo's nose and he picked up on the possible yeast infection which i didnt know about, as they have been a little more itchy but i thought it was down to that their bath was due. inbreeding And if you take them you have an idea on how good the vet is too. xx>>>

Glad the vets trip went well. He sounds like he knows his stuff :)

Sorry to hear the boys may have a little yeast infection but sure it will shift quickly.

Good luck with the baths! Hope Joey stays nice and white ;)

I cant find any info on the internet about guinea pigs with yeast infections?

I said to the vet that the reason they have a little greasy hair is because i used the coco neem melt and its from that. Maybe he was just being cautious? As they do have a little dry skin and i said about mites and he said definalty not and he looked closely at their fur with a thing that had a magnifying glass on it. I then said could it be fungal and he said 'yes possible yeast.' but whatever it is he seemed certain that the hibiscrub would get rid of it. :))

I done their first bath today and they were very good and Joey is still white! :))
