Hi All,

I just wondered if anyone here had used Vets4Pets before?

I'm personally not looking to use them as we have ours looked at at Holly House Vets which is the approved one list here but a friend used them today and her Guinea pig is really unwell. They seemed knowledgable so just wondered what everyone else thought?

Also here's a pic of our newest addition little Artemis who we adopted yesterday making a total of 6 piggies now :)

Thanks

We go to our local Vets4Pets and they are very good, but like any vet practice it depends on the expertise and experience of the individual vets themselves. We are lucky ours has 2 real piggy experts working there, but all vets are trained and apprenticed independantly so it will really depend what area the vets have chosen to specialise in during their training, and what animals they have treated before. Always worth asking them first! Any good vet will admit when they are out of their depth and refer you to a more experienced colleague when necessary.
Artemis is gorgeous :)

I have had good and bad experiences there... good was with the regular vet and bad was with a locum.... for anything other than general stuff I will go back to Chine House now which is on the GPF list. I guess it really is pot luck who you get at the practice... some may know more than others..

It will vary from place to place however my Vets4Pets aren’t very good. They misdiagnosed one of my pigs and he was on medication for a really long time, it cost a ton in vet bills and he was no better than before. He was on constant medication for something he didn’t need for a good few months, part of me thinks it is what gave him liver disease later in life which, of course, is terminal.

Thanks all, I was thinking that, I was just a bit concerned as our friends guinea pig is really ill and really the vet couldn't say what the issue is with her otherthan stating it's really bad and gave 2 antibiotics and recommended critical care twice a day. I'm going to keep tabs on how she is and if the vet sounds like shes just throwing things at the problem I'm going to push for her to use Holly House Vets as they're Exotic vet is brilliant and really helped us when Dotty had a URI a few weeks back

That's awful, that's my concern to be honest!

If it’s a one off situation, like you can’t get an appointment with the exotic vet then it won’t hurt too much, or if it’s something like a hay poke which are generally diagnosed the same as a cat or dog. If it’s being used long term, and especially if the pig seems quite unwell then I honestly wouldn’t recommend it. Our exotic vet is almost an hour away which is why it took us so long to actually commit to it (and someone on the forum had actually recommended our local Vets4Pets so we trusted them) but if we’d have gone there in the first place, we’d have been much better off. I’d definitely explain to your friend that the exotic vet is always a better option

Thanks I'll have a chat with her, its defo not worth just hoping for the best in these situations!

I use vets4pets and travel across the city for them. Our local reputable rescue use them too. There are some very knowledgeable vets there but as said it's just a franchise so it's about scoping out different ones

My local Vets4Pets is very good and I have recommended them on the Forum. I am moving soon and fortunately the vet that gave my Christian his life saving op last year has transferred to the Vets4Pets where I'll be living so I'll see her again.

I have spent thousands of pounds at an exotic vets that is recommended on the forum over the last 2 years. The last few times I have been there I have had serious concerns about some of the things that have gone on. Last week I tried our nearest vets4pets and I am very impressed by the receptionist and the lovely vet we saw (receptionists recommendation for a piggie). As already said vets4pets will vary from branch to branch and vet to vet but I will certainly use this one again.

Thanks all that's quite reassuring, with it being a franchise I always wondered how good could they actually be but I guess franchises have pros and cons. If we ever need to go to the vet and cant drive the hour and a half to Holly House maybe we will try our local Bradford Vet4Pets. You're all very helpful so thanks for the help!

Another advantage of Vets4Pets is that there are no emergency vets fees for the weekend if they are in a Pets at Home as their normal working hours is when the shop is open.
