As most of you will now know I have Grant and I am still looking to find him a Young boar as a friend. I am slowly changing my mind and thinking along the lines of having him neutered.What are peoples views on me having him neutered then due to me having a very large cage I was thinking maybe rescuing a couple of sows to go with him.Not only am I then giving him extra company but also ...giving a very loving home to a couple of needy girls too.If I did would it matter if the girls were similar age. Please all advice welcome. I have been looking through the Sokel resuce pages and have seen some lovely paired up girls looking for homes.
 
just been looking at Maria!x) From what I have read she would not be ready for adoption until August which would give Grant time to recuperate from being nutered. How would I go about having somone home check me with it been in Warrington and me in Wakefield?

I would say yes, a good idea but make sure you use a vet that has done this op many times before, it is a tricky operation. Ask a local rescue for a recommendation perhaps? I have heard of neuters going wrong with heartbreaking results so he will need the best chance possible.
I had one of my boars neutered by my trusted guinea savvy vet and he is now happliy married with 3 wives :))

Maria is gorgeous, a very pretty piggy. No problem with homechecking, thanks to the M62. When you have made a final decision about Grant, keep in touch and I am sure we can sort something out. x Jane
 
Try him with a younger boar rather than subject him to unnecessary surgery.
Like marriage, surgery should be undertaken "neither lightly nor wantonly."
 
I agree with Alcesterpigs, I have only ever attempted to have one boar neutered and we lost him leaving me heartbroken and guiltridden. I have four boars and they're paired up - my one pair have a mesh seperator down the middle of their cage as they refuse to share things, and they're so unbelievably happy together. I don't think neutering is always the best way to go when you're already completely in love with an animal, the risk is there however minimal.
 
yep I agree with you all why putting him through an unnecassary op. I was just thinking of different options. I think i'll stick to my original plan a young boar. Thanks for helping me through this.
 
I too have older boys with younger ones & have 2 singletons who live happily side by side.
I did have one of my boars neutered earlier this year & only because he would not accept a baby boy & he craved piggy company - it wasn't a decision i took lightly (he was almost 2 when i had him done) & thankfully he was & is fine & now has 2 wives :)
 
i also agree that its better to try him with Boys rather than an unecessary op,and not only that you will be giving a home to a boar which unfortunantly get overlooked quite reguarly x

maybe you could take him to a rescue and let him choose a little mate? :)
 
hi, i would get him a friend, but if you can't give him lots of attention, i had two boy guineapigs, but one died, then the other started to realy like me and he kept doing things for me like guarding!

I agree to a certain extent about this as any operation has risks BUT you should be aware that boar relationships cn be tricky unless experienced and presented with a choice of boars to try him with. Unless you have plenty of room for single boars as the result of fallings out? I am not saying they WILL fall out but it's 50/50 really!

I try to pair boars up whenever possible, but in Georgies case, 3 attempts were unsuccessful so my options were limited.

As Fi said make sure you have the sapce if the boys do decide to fall out. I have Ron on his own at the moment, he is very nervous so I am waiting until that calms down and he is over the hormonal stage before I pair him with a boar or get him neutered.

If you have the space then my first choice would be a boar v boar pairing. Good luck!
 
I went in and checked on Grant this morning about 5.30 and he must have heard me walking across the landing and all I copuld here was him wheeking very loud and scurrying around. For the first time he came up to the cage door when I opend it he did this funny little jump and fell over lol and I got wait for it..........my first guinea pig kiss ").
