Hello. This is my second Vitamin C deficiency guide.
Hope it helps
What is Vitamin C deficieny?
Vitamin C Deficiency, is a deficiency. It occurs when guinea pigs haven't had enough Vitamin C in their diet. Because guinea pigs can't produce it (VC) themselves, they rely on us to provide it to them. My list of Vitamin C Fruits & Veggies will come later on. This deficiency can unfortunately lead to death, so it is important that you take your guinea to a vet straight away, if he or she is showing any of these signs:
Loss of appetite
Depression
Lameness & Sore Joints
Bleeding Gums & Bruising
Ruffled Fur & Weight Loss
Tenderness to touch
These symptoms can lead to other diseases/deficiencys aswell, so it is up to the vet to diagnose the problem.
How much Vitamin C does my guineapig need?
A strong healthy guinea pig will need on average between 10-30 mg/kg per day for good health. If your guineapig is pregnant or ill, he or she will need slightly more. They will need 30 mg/kg per day.
But too much VC can result in poor growth. So keep an eye on how much you give your guineapig.
If your guineapig is already ill (without VCD), then he or she is more at risk of getting this deficiency.
A lovely list of fruit and veggies you can give your guinea containing VC
I've picked a few out for you :
Red, Green, Coloured Peppers
Tomatoes (no leaves! they are poisonous)
Kale
Parsley
Strawberries
Kiwi Fruit & any citrus fruits
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Romaine Lettuce
Apples
Oranges
Cucumber
I hope I've helped you out, and I hope I haven't got anything wrong this time!
Charl xx
Hope it helps
