Hello everyone,
It’s been quite a while since I’ve been on here, but I need some nutrition/supplement help. I hope this is in the right section.
I’m looking at vitamin c supplements for my elderly guinea pig Alvin (little man is a 8!). He’s doing okay, we had a scare recently where all he would eat was grass and refuse anything else and was quite mopey and not himself. He was fed critical care but even refused that. Took him to the vet which resulted in a vitamin c shot, after a little bit he seemed to perk back up and started eating and behaving his normal chirpy self, and now is completely back to normal. Which makes me wonder, is he not getting enough vitamin C in his diet? He hates the veggies/fruits that are the highest in vitamin c but we do feed all our piggies the Oxbow Pellets, he seems to be the biggest fusso and will only have a small serving of this.
I’ve been doing quite a bit of research, I’ve been looking at a lot of vitamin c supplements both human and guinea pig. My question is; the Oxbow Natural Science vitamin C tabs, they have a whole lot of ingredients that I’m worried may do more harm than good -Timothy Grass, Barley Flour, Oat Groat Flour, Cane Molasses, L-Ascorbyl-2-Monophosphate (Vitamin C), Flax Seed Meal, Brewers Dried Yeast, Guar Gum, Fat Product, Mixed Tocopherols (preservative), Rosemary Extract
Would these be ok for an elderly guinea pig?
I know many people use human vitamin c tabs, but in Australia, I’m struggling to find any that don’t have all the unnecessary stuff that could potentially be harmful or the dosage is too high.
If anyone help me out, that would be great. My other alternative is natural vitamin c from the Acerola berry, if anyone has had any experience with this let me know!
Thanks so much in advance. I don’t really want him getting to that lethargic stage again, so of course this is a major preventative measure and should of definitely done it sooner.

Firstly congratulations on having an 8 year old guinea pig - it sounds like you have done an amazing job with Alvin.
In theory if he is eating pellets and hay and the occasional piece of fresh, then he should be getting enough Vitamin C in his regular diet.

However if you feel he would benefit form a top up then the Oxbow tablets will be fine for him.
Whenever one of mine has been ill or stressed I use Vit C drops for small animals from my vet, but this won't help you much as I am sure Swiss vets use different medications to Australian ones!
I did look at buying human Vit C. but never trusted myself to get the dosage correct.

So go with the Oxbow if he will eat them - they certainly won't do him any harm.

My vet told me that any overdose of vit c , is just peed out anyway.

My vet wanted me to give my older boars some extra vit c as they have got very fussy on the veg front. She recommended the Oxbow pellets as the best thing to give. Little monkeys will not have them however they are disguised! I'm syringing Vetark pro c which she has also approved. Versele Laga do vit c drops for guinea pigs as well. Don't know what you can get in Austrailia but may be worth googling these.

Thank you to everyone for your help and recommendations. So very appreciated. I ordered some oxbow tabs just in case but I will most definitely be looking at these suggestions. ❤️
