Does anyone give Vit C supplements? If so in what form and where from ... I cannot find it anywhere.

I am a little concerned that my 2 may not be getting sufficient vit c as neither like oranges. They do get a range of foods listed as high VIT C in the "Shopping List" sticky already.

Advice?

I don't supplement mine usually with Vit C as it is in their food. However, I did supplement Joey in his old age before he passed away, with liquid Vit C.

I found it hard to track out a liquid form of it but Holland and Barrett do supply it by the bottle.

I syringed Joey a dose each day or put some on his cucumber or tomato when he was eating.

If you put a supplement of Vit C in your piggies water bottle, you have to rely on them drinking the water. Alot of my piggies don't seem to drink much water so the H & B Vit C was a good bet for me.

You don't need to give him the vitamin c supplements (maybe if he was really ill, not sure about that) but generally not. As long as he is getting vitamin c from his vegetables/fruit then he will be fine.

I dont give them supplements, sorry!

Mine seem to get enough from all their food!
But as Goldie said before me you shouldn't really put it in their water bottles unless you know they will definatley drink it all!

cheers guys. They do eat plenty of the other types of veg that are high in vit C but I just wanted to be sure they were getting the best.

how about for a potentially pregnant sow? (see my thread in pregnancy & labour) does she need anything? and if she does, would a supplement for pregnant sows cause her damage if she isn't actually pregnant?

thanks again guys. :(|)

As long as she is receiving good nugget/dried food manufactured especially for guinea pigs which contains Vit C, fresh hay, water changed daily and lots of fresh greens, carrots, fruit etc. each day, then she should be fine.

I would not supplement extra Vit C, but I will be interested to know if other members do.

she does get all of that anyway. thanks Goldie.

would be interested to hear what others say. there are so many websites out there telling you different things.

Hi, after taking Pickle to the vet for a check up (everything seemed fine, just a fast heart beat, but may be down to the big man vet stressing her out :( ) he suggested getting some Vitamin C chewable tablets to give her once a day, he said they cant overdose on Vitamin C, so too much is better than too little.
I am very curious to know as to what Vitamin C tablets to use as the only ones i can find in a supermarkets (as the vet suggested) are orange flavoured and have lots of sugar in it, does anyone know if these are ok?
Thanks x

Supplements really aren't necessary if the pig is eating a varied diet. High quality dry feed has stabilised Vit C in, and one eighth (inch square slice) of a pepper contains all the full daily requirement for piggies, so it doesn't take much at all to keep on top of it. A wide variety will ensure adequate nutrition.

Oxbow do a Vitamin C tablet especially for piggies - http://www.petlifeonline.co.uk/Store/Small-Animals/Feed/Oxbow-GTN-50C

I know, this is exactlly what i thought. They have a constant supply of fresh veggies, their dried food is the pets at home nuggets, is this good enough for them, i also put vitamins in their water, which they drink with no problems, maybe he wasn't a very good vet. Didn't think to feed them peppers though, so thanks for that. Any colour ok?
