hiya,

i have got some of those vitamin drops to put in my piggies water but i was under theimpression before i brought it that it should be used once a month just to keep them happy and healthy.
anyways i read the bottle and it said to add it to the piggies drinks every day!

is this correct? do any of use use water supplements?

I'm concerned if i used it everyday then id get through the £5 bottle in a couple of weeks easily.

thanks in advance!

Vitamin supplements are unnecessary, and the water ones are quite possibly the worst. A pig gets all the nutrients they need from hay, high quality pellets, and a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables. Pure Vitamin C tablets/liquid should be kept on hand for times of illness, but they usually don't need anything the rest of the time.

Well said CCC4 :)

It is only at times of stress or ill health that a piggy may need a Vit C supplement and then it should be syringed never put in water bottles.

Vit C is of course a daily requirement for piggies but as has already been said the fresh vegetables and fruit you provide your piggy with every day should contain enough for normal function. :)

Spend any extra money on good quality veg and fruit.

can i just ask, i use the pro c vitamin powder from pets at home, i was recommended to get this by them when i bought the guinea pigs. bare in mind its the first time ive ever had them so did as i was told. is this necessary also? thanks helen

Nope, not necessary at all. A lot of first time owners get sold all sorts of unnecessary things. Make sure they're eating a good variety of fruit and veg daily, and if you need to give a vitamin C supplement, a pure liquid or tablet is better.

ok thanks for that, but why is the liquid better may i ask, is it just that its not full of extra things that arent needed? :)

oh and what kind of fruit is ok for them. ive only tried them on apple, veg they love cucumber and carrot, ive read a few different things on the net but some websites contradicted thereselves. :)

Any supplements are generally syringed straight into a piggies mouth so a liquid is easier to administer.

Nothing should be in the water bottles - except water :)

Please don't waste your money - these pet shops have a lot to answer for.

ok thanks, i just hope the vitamin powder hasnt harmed them in anyway because they have had this since i got them, thanks to pets at home :(

This is a really good shopping list for guinea pigs. I have it printed off and on the fridge, plus I take it with me when I do my shopping so that I can double check against the list.

Don't worry, it shouldn't have harmed your piggie at all. Pet shops tell you that you need unnecessary things just so you spend more money :)
