We brought our guinea pigs 3 weeks ago and the pet shop recommended that we supplement there water with vitamin C as they always do, I've sins then been told there are some disadvantages to doing this and I'm now not sure weather I should stop, I'd really appreciate any advice. Thank you.

You shouldnt need to give your piggies any vitamins unless they have a medical problem. As long as you give them high vitamin foods they will not need supplements. There is a HUGE list under FOOD

i have always given Shadow Vitamin C in his water and I have never had a problem with it, but then again all piggies are different! maybe try a couple drops on his food? Just a suggestion.

I have never given mine vit C drops. Possibly good if they are off their food due to illness but with a good varied veggie and pellet diet, they shouldnt be needed. I believe pet shops give vit C drops as they do not in fact give the shop piggies any veg >:(

If they get a good variety of vegetables daily, plus their pellets/mix (which should have vit C in it) and a constant supply of hay they don't need them :) They can make the water taste funny so the pigs stop drinking it too.

Did the petshop recommend fresh veg daily too? A lot of the time they recommend vit drops but no fresh veg :tickedoff:

No I don't think they did mention anything about fruite/veg but maybe they assumed it was just comman sense or something, I've always given it to them, these pet shops sound as if they know what they are talking about at the time and seem to be quite experienced but you soon find out there not.
