Hi,
My boar is estimated to be about 2.5 years old and we have had a large number of nail injuries since we got him. I have amended his habitat to reduce chances of him injuring himself but not found a definite cause. In terms of diet, he gets science selective nuggets plus we feed him carrot, spinach, greens, cabbage, lettuce and tomatoes. He is a fussy eater, but I try to get his diet as well balanced as I can. I clip his nails every few weeks on the little but often approach. However, in the last few weeks he has had 3 nail injuries and now a broken a toe!
Thankfully he has no infection, but it is painful and the vet has put him on metacam for 2 weeks. She also is going to enquire with a colleague about brittle bones in piggies. I wouldn't be surprised if he is a bit inbred as he was an unsold pet shop piggie who has 3 nipples!
In the meanwhile I was thinking about trying to help with a vitamin supplement. He is a fussy eater, but loves been syringed fed so I would prefer that delivery system if possible then I know he has had it. He barely drinks any water but loves hydrated dry food so I could mix a liquid in with that. I am mainly interested in increasing his vitamin D as he is an indoor piggy and has powdery urine indicating he gets enough calcium. Does anybody have any suggestions/experience with a vitamin supplement? good or bad I have never needed to feed a supplement before!
