I don't really know how to describe it, but my three month old guinea pig walks iregularly. She moves both back legs at the same time, resulting in a sort of bunny hop movement. She's been doing this for a while, although she has a large variety of veggies in her diet. She is also a but porkies than my other girl of the same age, but I'm not sure if that is at all relevant. I'm so scared she's got something horrible wrong with her joints, and that shes in pain, but that she's not showing it. Please help? :(

The only thing you can do is to take her to the vet. Guinea pigs do hide pain so you cannot really be sure if she is in pain but bunny hopping does suggest she may be.

Okay. Thank you. I was just hoping that it was a symptom of something fairly common. I have been resisting googling it and scaring myself more :/

I know bunny hopping can be caused by a Vit C deficiency, but as you mentioned she has a big variety of veg I wouldn't have thought it would be due to this. It may just be she has got used to moving like that, or it could be some sort of neurological issue or pain. As piggyfan said, I would be inclined to get her checked out by a vet just to be on the safe side.

I have a piggie who does this (Nutmeg who is in my avatar), she was seen at The Cambridge Cavy Trust and also by three different vets. All that could be thought it was is both a learn neurological behavior (as my piggie has a head tilt too), and Vedra at CCT suggested that it was probably vit C deficiency at a young age, highly likely as she was a pets at home bred pig.

See your vet, hope all goes ok. May be worth taking a quick xray to check joints and the spine. I did.

x.

I'd just like to thank you all for your advice. I took her to the vets last night and unfortunately she has hip dysplasia. The vet says that she isn't in any pain now, but to keep an eye of her as it may cause problems later in life. But for now she's happy, and otherwise healthy, which I am very pleased about. :)

Oh bless her. I don't know if there's anything that can be done with hip dysplasia, especially in such a small animal. At least she doesn't seem to be in any pain and you have a diagnosis now :)
