I really wanted to rescue a bonded pair of rabbits, but apparently vaccinations in my area need to be done every 6 months, the vaccination for both myxy and vhd are not too bad at £23 but when you have two rabbits (£46) twice a year will be £92 , and hubby is not happy with the cost, he says i can have them and not to vaccinate them, but I wouldn't be happy with that, so I can't have them. Boo Hoo.
I used to have an adorable male dutch rabbit, he was a house rabbit, loved him soooooo much, We lived in Germany when we had him,(husband in the army), but when we came home my husband would not pay £600 to quarrentine him, I had to find him a good home. Which I did, the people who adopted him got an hour long lecture from me, before they could take him,BROKE MY HEART, and I miss him,
i have felt guilty for letting him go ever since, i felt i was letting him down. love you alex x

VHD only has to be done once a year, myxi is twice a year, so that cuts the cost a bit! Or they could be house rabbits again?

reading this I am so so so glad that all those rules have changed now...

When I moved from Germany to the UK I could take my piggers and rabbit with me, didnt have to pay nowt, didnt have to quarantine them, nothing...

What year was it when you moved back?

we took him with us when we moved there in 1999, and we moved back in Jan 2002, They had just brought in pet passports at that time but only for dogs.

would love to have a house rabbit again, don't really have any space, and don't know whether to trust my two yorkies,
Alex used to run around the house and garden all day, his companion was my lurcher dog, they got along great, Morgan my dog died in Germany at the age of 13, Got really ill, very quickly, and we had to let him go, that broke my heart even more, and i was heavily pregnant at the time sooooo upsetting.
My two yorkies are ok with my piggies, but if they were running around under their noses then it could be a different matter.rabbits are so intelligent, alex used to come on call, he was gorgeous.

Can you not tell him its only 25 pence a day for both of them. (which it is) and that you will put away the money so every 6 months you wont even be asking him for it?

I know whatever i say he won't like it. He would probably back down EVENTUALLY but I would never hear the last of it, especially with 2 dogs to get done every year too. He is just not an animal lover. He thinks that rabbits don't need the vaccination,he thinks it highly unlikely that the rabbit would get the disease and that vets only advise it so they make money---- MEN,
(i always had alex vaccinated)

Gee that's difficult, sorry to hear you're having this problem. Can you not do the 'i love you eyes' i'm trying that at the moment and the other i'm trying is 'for Mother's Day i'd like a piggie' :)
If he's not going to bend it's better to accept what you have and throw everything into it...Now you don't repeat this, but i never tell my OH exactly what i spend at the vets, he has no idea just how much our Duke is worth, err i'm guessing now in excess of over $3,000 AUS but to see that beautiful little face well i melt.
Are the two dogs his? Unfortunately people tend to think smaller pets are throw aways :o >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:
Wishing you all the best, let us know how you go :)

no, the two dogs are not his, they are mine too. ha ha
i don't drive, so he usually takes me to the vets, so he sees the bills.
I had to spend out on the piggies last year, firstly star who was meant to be a sow, and ended up a boar, we had him neutered, thirty odd quid, then Daisy got an abcess under her chin, and had to be operated on sixty odd quid, she had respiratory problems after the op, had several courses of antibiotics, which didn't work. (she was worth every penny but she sadly died from this). you should of seen his face with the cost of it all. He moaned his a-se off, but he still went with it. he thinks i'm an animal freak. I AM xx

He sounds like my dad! He goes ape sh*t over the taking the dog, rabbit and now pigs to the vet but thinks nothing about spending £1000s on his pond fish. He spent £80 at the weekend just on food.

As for mix Vaccs I spoke to my vet the other day because I thought they were only yearly but had read twice yearly. He said we were in a low risk area anyway and said reagrdless of that it depends what environment the rabbits were kept and whether they were exposed to mixamatosis. In our case a once yearly jab is fine.

I hope you can persuade your OH. Best of luck :)

House rabbits need vaccinating too as they can still catch both

A good rabbit forum for advice is Rabbits United http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/

I would say shop around for vaccs, as my myxi only costs £8.95 and vhd £11 so for both buns £40 a year which isn't too bad - I can't work out 40 divided by 12 but it's not much per month lol, I also only do mine once a year

yes i used to have alex vaccinated yearly too, but i lived somewhere else then,my vets have reccomended twice yearly because we are quite rural( apparently.)
i think the cost is more because i live in the south, but could check around.
i know myxy can be carried by mosquitoes so they should be vaccinated whatever.
thanks for the website link will look later.
