Warning: Freezing UK nights ahead!

Last night's frost didn't even clear before dark tonight. Yeugh.

Climate change is not just warmer weather; it also means a more sluggish jet stream and blocked weather patterns.

It is basically more extremes - when it gets cold it gets really cold and for longer, the same with heat, with rain and drought... :(
We're actually in a mini ice age right now, from what I've been learning about recently (as I've also learnt that it's the sun that controls the climate) and apparently we're now in a 'solar minimum', which means a cooling planet and longer, colder winters (Generally).

My central heating system is from the dark ages but I grew up with oil fired central heating. It was on for four hours a day, max, and if it ran out you just wore 3-4 jumpers til the tank could get refilled. That's how we discovered I had Raynauds when I was ~7, lol.

I remember growing up with a real fire and having to go out to fetch coal from the bunker.
Us kids all had to take a turn.
I learnt how to lay and light a fire properly.
I still like a real fire.

We also had quilts and blankets, extra jumpers and hot water bottles.
Maybe we’re just going soft !

In the 17th & 18th centuries the winters were so cold that on occasion the River Thames froze over. The ice was so solid it was possible to hold a ‘ Frost Fair’ on the river.
That suggests mini ice ages then as well as today.

Yes the climate has always gone through cooling and warming periods. I live in Somerset and have heard so many times how it was once so warm that peaches were grown in the Mendips!
Climate change is natural, it has always changed, and always will. Just think how big the sun is as well, it just makes so much sense that it controls the climate, a bit like the moon controls the tides.

I also have this, saved to my computer..

After the 1683 "Great Frost" in (January I think) snow filled the roads up to the hedges in Somerset and didn't thaw for many months. Snow still lingered along north facing hedgerows on the Mendips in September.

We didn't have central heating when I was a child. We had a coal fire, there were fireplaces in every room but my parents could only afford to light one fire so we lived during the day in the dinning room it was smaller than the living room and easier to heat. The chimney from that room also went through our bedroom and helped take the chill off. Jack Frost on the inside of the sash windows was a regular occurrence. The toilet was outside across the yard. I remember having to shovel the snow away to make a path to the toilet door!
These are some of the things from the 'good old days' that I wouldn't want back!

I remember central heating being installed in our house. Before then we had sheets and multiple blankets on our beds and a wall mounted electric bar fire up high in the bathroom with a pull cord to switch it on. We all had hot water bottles in covers that had pockets to warm our PJs in to take the chill off them.

We always had duvets but only because my mum discovered them when my dad was posted in Germany. When any friends came round, they all thought it very glamorous and modern. Mum had to make the covers for years as you couldn't buy them here. The best thing about a coal fire was cooking toast over it! My sister and I also had to take turns fetching the coal, cleaning the hearth and lighting the fire.

It's a shame they want us to get rid of coal, coal fires etc....Cheap, reliable energy for us all to benefit from. 😞 Ok it was a pain to make the coal fires up in the morning, but at least we could afford to keep warm, not like now.

Woke up this morning to a 14.5° bedroom :td: that said apparently dumping enough hay into a 20 sq ft cage to cover the floor in about an extra 3" of hay carpet helped, because they've both been much more inclined to get out of bed to eat this morning. That's after the heating would've clicked off at 3am, btw, so it'd been off for 6 hours or so.

We've had a mild autumn so far.the piggies have not had time to climatize.
This is a cold spell that's not having much difference between day and night temperatures.its caught me out .
