I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, ive not been on here in a while but felt i needed to warn everyone.

Yesterday i purchased two large bags of hay from P@H on a two for £9 deal.
I usually buy my hay from a local farm shop but they have closed down so had to go there.

I have just been cleaning my girls out and whist doing this i have found numerous bits of plastic in the actual hay! I have thrown the hay away and have put them back in on fleece but i cleaned my new little boy out last night and he has been on the hay overnight! :(
I probably didnt notice because it was dark and some of the bits are really small.

I will be complaining very seriously about this, I'm not having my babies lives put at risk! I just wanted to warn everyone not to buy their large bags of compressed hay.

I find farm hay is always like that, with having a horse, P@H hay is usually far better quality, your just unfortunate to have got a bad batch... What's probably happened is when the hay was cut, it must have come from the edge of the field, that would explain the bits of plastic and leaves.. Once the hay is baled, anything within can't be seen until the bale is re-opened..

oh no! poor little wheeekers!
hopefully they'll be okay!

i too buy hay from p@h, but only the Burgess Excel stuff, so haven't had this problem!
i did get some of the timothy p@h hay from there when i first got them, but found it was quite 'dusty' so i got rid straight away and replaced!

thanks for the heads up though :)
i'm sure everyone will appreciate it :D

Sorry bonbon i think ive confused you. I usually get my hay from a farm shop which ive had no problems with, its the p@h hay that have the plastic bits in hence me warning everyone about it.

I always buy my hay from Pets at Home, not instore tho online instead!
I havent had any problems with it :)
But thanks for letting us know

thanks

thanks for the heads up hope they are ok give them a kiss from mexoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

Hay is a natural product, and unfortunately, if there are things in the fields, they're likely to end up in your hay. Personally, I'm surprised that we don't find more "forgeign objects" in our hay.

I have to admit that I'm more intrigued by the fact that the plastic looks like crime scene tape! :))

omg Amanda I hadn't even noticed that! lol! I have found a couple of foreign objects in my hay from Wilko's in the past but the majority of the time its fine. Worth a complaint though as you might get freebies and I love freebies! hehe

Ive so far had 3 quite large bags of hay form 'The Range' which are quite reasonably priced at £3.99, the P@H bags were about half the size of these bags for about the same price, so its good value for money and so far have not found anything inside and my piggys seem to really like it.

I get my hay from P@H as I can't find decent quality hay anywhere else. I'm not overly impressed with the hay, as there are often large sticks in there and it can be quite sharp as well (although this seems to have improved)

I do remember, though, finding all sorts of objects in the woodshavings! There was half a blue glittery pencil, bits of plastic, quite large chunks of wood and just loads of random stuff. I wasn't overly impressed. But their sawdust is horrible anyways. One bag was literally DUST. So much for it being dust-extracted woodshavings!

I found a bone in my hay a few months ago. We also found a nice ring in the bottom of our rabbits hutch once, it had obviously come from the hay we got from the farm shop. We were going to take it back but it got lost and we have never found it again.

Have you tried Hay for Pets? Very reasonably priced and it's beautiful hay.

I get hay from the range too, really good value. I get through one of those every 3 days.

I've used hay for pets twice and the last batch smelt a bit damp so tried Zooplus. Excellent hay until the last batch :( It was sooo dusty that I complained and got a full refund.
There is a pet store a few miles from us and their hay is £11.00 per sack, would guess around 8-10k and it is lovely so hope they'll keep stocking this.
I buy Excel and the Oxbow Timothy but limit their intake as it is quite expensive so they have maybe a handful or two twice a week rolleyes
Am always on the look out for good hay though as with 15 piggies, a larger amount is better :))

Ditto http://www.hayforpets.co.uk/ lovely stuff and a good size bag too

I get mine from here :)) The meadow hay is so lush and green, no wonder my piggies get grumpy with me when I run out (usually forget to order when I'm getting low mallethead ) and turn their noses up at everything else!

:)>>> that's disgusting - glad I don't use them anymore :o
Hope you complained :)

I hope you kept the receipt and took it back?
(edit: I just saw that you did in above post, sorry)
It's likely just a bad batch, but if you really make them realise how serious the situation could be for any customer who bought it and unwittingly gave it to their pets, the store may take off the whole batch from sale, thus preventing any animals from injury.

I've bought hay from lots of different sources. In the end if all probably comes from a far distant field and has been handled by many hands and machines before it gets to you.
I once bought a bag from my local pet shop and was mortified when I got it home and found half a mumified mouse in the pack..
But that's nature. Poor thing probably crawled into a hay stack to keep warm and then.. slice..

We named it halfling. Then gave it a proper burial.

I get my (usually excellent quality) hay online from the Hay Experts. You can get lots of different varieties. I have also recently bought from Zooplus - again lots of great quality and choice. This saves me having to go to P@H (where I tend to succumb to little eyes and come home with more than I bargained for - to OH's displeasure lol). Both companies deliver very quickly and it saves me messing around parking and also the petrol to get there and back.

I stopped using Pets At Home hay (even though I don't object to the shop itself as some forums do) when one bale was full of needlesharp pieces so fine they went into my skin like - well very fine needles.

I don't like buying hay online as nearly everyone uses couriers and couriers only deliver when people are at work and always have depots 50 miles away and won't leave with neighbours.

So I get mine from Kennelgate now, mostly.
