Just went to Wilkinson's and picked up some dandelion and green oat mix and a bag of fruit and veg feast for my girls. On reading what is in the fruit and veg feast i was surprised to see potato listed as this is poisoness (sp?). Please everyone check what is in anything they buy for their guineas. I am just glad i did before i fed it to them. I'm wondering what to do as obviously this should not be on the shelves!

Hopefully someone on here will have some advise regarding this food. Surely, they have been tested etc before being allowed to release for sale?

I feed my piggies Nutri-Pro Guinea from Just for Pets. They order a sack in for me, so it's a really cheap way of feeding them. 10KG sack is £8.99 Plus it's non-selective so I don't get any waste.

Nothing with potato in it should be fed to guinea pigs. I'm going back to the shop for a refund and to point out that they should not be selling this with a picture of a guinea pig on the front! i don't know whether potato is safe for rabbits and chinchillas.

As far as I know only raw, normal potato is poisonous to guinea pigs.

Potato in this form has been cooked or dried (not totally sure on this but the harmful chemicals arent there anymore), so is fine to give a guinea. I've given mine the Rosewood Naturals equivalent of what you've just bought. They actually didn't like it so much, but some of them ate it.

It's not poisonous to your piggies.

It's the chemicals in it that are poisonous; when it's been through whatever process it is to dry it out, the chemicals are no longer present and it's just like crisps to us. Raw potato is also bad for us, we can't eat it, but we can eat it cooked. :)

As far as I know the only raw exception to piggies is sweet potatoes, though I've never fed my piggles that!

I know people say potatoes are toxic to piggies.. but my great uncle was down last year and he used to keep piggies as a boy and he always remembers giving piggies warm potatoes as a lovely winter treat.. he said they loved them and they got lovely and fat over the winter.. I was surprised when he told me and i was like "really?, I didn't think they could eat potatoes," he was like Oh yer, food for our pets were scares back then so we gave them potatoes in the winter as a treat". :x

I would still never give my piggies potatoes.. due to so many people saying they are toxic..:{

Cooked/Dried potatoe is fine to feed, its when its raw that it causes problems, even then its supposedly only bad when the potatoe has gone green?

I have bought the fruit and veg feast last year and the pigs & rabbits were fine :)

Rabbits are the same and should never have raw potatoe my my nanna feeds her rabbits cooked potatoe with no ill affect.

When I had piggies as a child we used to give them warm cooked potato peelings in the winter............wouldn't dream of giving them to my piggies now though!
