I just got my first guinea pig in about 12 years two days ago. I'm not sure whether or not he's sick, though. He eats fine, he walks around, he's still frightened, but he seems, overall, okay. But I noticed some water around its right eye, and also that there are some white marks near it. I put him in the box he came in and took a few pictures of his eye. Maybe someone might know what it is.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I would advise cleaning his face with cotton wool and a little cooled boiled water and see if it returns. He could have a hay poke (injury to the eye itself from burrowing in to stalky hay), a skin problem that is causing irritation, it may even be the first signs of a respiratory infection. Hopefully it's just a quick fix with a clean up as he has dust in there from the bedding.

If the eye continues to water it would be wise to get a check up at the vet sooner rather than later so if any treatment is required it can be dealt with easily.

Thank you, Suzygpr. I've cleaned his eye and I'm going to keep watching him to see if it returns. I really hope that it's nothing too serious. I'll give him a day or two and see if it comes back.

Thank you, and I'm based in Chicago, IL. USA.

The water around his--I named him Hamlet--eyes have went away and he's acting normally, still. I'm still checking on him constantly to see if there's anything wrong.

That's good news about the eye not watering any more. Also great that you will keep a watch on his condition.
