Hi all.

I was wondering if some people would share their experiences with water filters and bladder issues please?

The reason I ask is that when I lived in the North East my pigs had tap water and we never had a bladder issue.

When I moved to the East Midlands one of my boys started with calcium deposits and went on to have 2 bladder stones that required surgery.

I read up on it and briefly used a Brita filter. I had a few discussions with piggy people online and in person and it was thought that the filter wasn't good enough and the calcium content of the local water would still be too high.

So I swapped to a low calcium bottled water and have had good results for a few years now.

But, my local shop doesn't sell it anymore and I can't get it delivered to where I work so for the past 2 month's I've been using Brita filters again.

Podrick is now leaving white spots on the fleece.

I'm puzzled because I've not changed anything except the water. People have good results with filters so I'm wondering why I'm not. Do people run water through them a few times, so to double filter it?

Any experience stories would be great!

Thanks from me and Podrick

Beautiful boy!
sorry can't help as water is soft here but I'm sure another member will be along soon with advice.
I keep meaning to get a filter too though just in case!

I use a filter for myself and my piggies. It removes a lot of the calcium. I know this cos my kettle doesn't fur up any more. I think the water tastes nicer too. I live in a very hard water area. I only run the water through once.

I use filter water. It does remove enough calcium for my purpose as any stones that have turned up are from those sows that have been with me since before the switch. Fingers crossed, but I haven't needed another bladder stone operation since I started filtering my water 4 years ago.

Although filtering is not perfect compared to low calcium mineral water, it is much easier to come by. You can filter your water twice if you wish to, especially if you have got a guinea pig with bladder issues.

@piggie smitten Excellent! Thank you! I have a local Morrisons so I'll have a look.

The water I was using is only 4mg so it's not much different. The tap water is around 120mg so even if it filters 3/4 (I can't find the info currently but I think it was around that) it only reduces it to 30mg.

I was tempted to try Tesco at 10mg but off to Morrisons I go!

You're a star piggy smitten, thank you! :D:D
