Hi,

We have a guinea pig, almost 3, who drank an excessive amount of water. Partly he messed about with a bottle flooding his cage a bit. I changed it to two smaller 250 ml bottles and the spillage was less but he’d still need these refilling day and night. I’ve noticed recently his water intake has dropped and now sometimes one bottle hasn’t even emptied over a day or two, let alone both bottles.

He’s approximately 3.5. We lost our other pig last November quite suddenly and without much warning at 3 also.

Guineas pigs don’t tend to need much water as the vegggie should give provide plenty. I think it should be ok :)

Some piggies drink a lot and others not much at all. However, if you have noticed a sudden change in behaviours or habits then we would always recommend a vets visit to be absolutely sure

Hi! Water intake in guinea pigs can vary enormously individually, but it can also be influenced by the way they drink (spillage), weather changes (heatwaves, air con, radiators and big swings in temperature).
Switch to weighing daily at the same time instead of your weekly weight and health check and see a vet for health check if you are worried.
If you have an outdoors guinea pig in the UK now is the time to bring them indoors or under cover.
