I used to add addtional vitamin c drops to my piggies water but I recently ran out and haven't been to buy more as yet. However, the piggies hardly drank of the water before but now that its just plain water they are drinking loads. Do I really need to put the drops in and do other people use these drops? They get veg/fruit twice a day which I make sure there are loads that have vitamin c in them. ?

Vitamin drops can make piggys dye of thirst and are extremely bad for them
It makes the piggys water taste funny and that can explain why they havent drank anything :o They must be thirsty now as there drinking loads i would definitely leave the drops your wasting your money to make your pigs thirsty and i wouldnt bother O0

:D Awww dont worry about it as long as there ok now its i know stuff like this as i used to give mine the vit drops too and people on here when i first joined told me how bad it was for them O0

The drops encourage the growth of bacteria and the vitamin C in it degrades within a few hours (it degrades on contact with light). Useless and just sold to make money, not because they're good for the animals. You're doing the right thing through veggies - they only need a supplement if they're ill (and certainly not via their water).

Thats why I find this forum so useful - its great to get other people's views who actually have piggies otherwise you can buy what shops sell and what books say and not actually realise that you don't need the things or are using the wrong things. O0

I was going to get some of that ............................... good job i have'nt wasted my money yet
Did not know it was so bad for them.............thank god for this forum O0

I always thought those drops were essential! Thanx for letting me know the truth!

I always tell people not to bother with these drops. They are very expensive and as the OP said, the guineas stop drinking which if you did it long term, id guess it could be quite hazardous.

How do companies get away with marketing this stuff as essential?

They get away with it because unwitting people buy it which makes the company profit so they sell more and the cycle continues. While I'm sure it wouldn't kill a pig it won't do them any benefits, either.

I dont use it and my piggies still hardly drink anything?

What about the carrot drink stuff you can add to water? I've never tried it (my pigs don't like carrot much) but my mum tried it with hers. I don't think they drank very much. Is that bad for them too?

Ive not seen any of that and ive never tried it but mine love carrots

I wouldn't bother when you can just feed them a carrot occasionally.

Never add anything to the drinking water. If you give your pigs a large variety of veggies they will get all the vits they need.

Some pigs do not seem to drink much but they do get a lot of moisture from the veggies.Celery, cucumber and green veg are very moist. When you wash the veg under running water,do not shake them dry, this will give a bit more water.

If you are sure the pig is drinking very little and the urine is a bit thick or creamy colour, give some extra water by syringe.

x8) That'd be me then! x8)

I've stopped putting it in now but am not going to chuck it until it expires. It could come in handy if they're ill (god forbid).
