We can’t figure out what is wrong with Banner?

So I took Banner to our piggy savvy vet.

He’s eating fine, his droppings and urine are fine, breathing and heart are fine etc.

until yesterday he was still popcorning (not huge popcorns as he’s an older boy - but little attempts).

He is eating lots.

But he’s been gradually losing weight (around 50g a week). And as of the last couple of days he’s lying down a lot more (like flat out lying down that they do when they are really comfortable with their surroundings) and I don’t think he’s using his back end as well (he tends to hop his back end rather than walk - this only started yesterday). He has been lying down more and more over the last month or so. If I move him, he would rather lay down than wander off.

We are not 100% sure of his age but he was an older boy when we got him (about a year ago). He had the very thick claws, bony hips etc.

He eats all his veggies, munches through his piles of hay and is drinking normally.

the vet can’t find anything obvious? They checked for any respiratory, heart, digestive or bladder issues but all signs are good. They checked for any soreness in his joints, and found nothing.

not sure if anyone has any suggestions?

No suggestions here but I can offer support. His teeth were fine as well? It’s frustrating when there doesn’t seem to be any cause for weigh loss. Fingers crossed for you.

Sorry yes . Teeth all good.

thanks for your support💕

Poor Banner! I hope you can find out what’s wrong with him. Sending lots of hugs

I hate it when the illness can't be diagnosed. You don't know which way to go forward and how to help the piggy properly.

We had that with my past piggy Cookie. Problem started for her when she had a massive abscess in her neck. It took around 3 months to get rid of it. But we can't figure out what other problems she had coz we fixed the abscess problem. She kept on losing weight even if she was eating. So we had to keep on giving her CC. Simon and Kim eventually did some test just in case she has hyperthyroidism. But before we can figure out the results, she passed away after having URI. She only had it 3 days, not even had enough time for the antibiotics to work. Then after that, Simon said the result of her test was not hyperthyroidism and that nothing was abnormal with her test results.

Hubby just put it as something that was an effect of having too many antibiotics when we were trying to fix the abscess issues. That somehow, her immune system couldn't cope after all that. Of course all these was just our guests since we can't really get any diagnosis.

Hopefully you can soon figure out what's wrong with Banner. ❤

So sorry to hear about Cookie!
Banner has also been on Itrafungol for 3 weeks (while his ringworm cleared up), but his appetite and droppings are fine .

It’s more his mobility and him not wanted to get up anymore. He even lies down whilst eating most of the time

thank you for your support ❤️

Sometimes a piggie have a few quiet days. .
Banner being checked over should easy you worry . . But that doesn't help us hoomans...
Hope his weight loss stops and goes other way. .

poor Banner, he sounds like he has had a pretty comprehensive check up? It’s a difficult one, maybe watch and monitor for a few days?

That’s what I thought. The vet was open to listening to all of my concerns and suggestions. Just nothing obvious coming to mind, without scans or blood that is.
For all we know, he could be a very old boy too. It’s so hard to determine.
I will definitely be keeping close watch. Just been in now and he’s scoffing cucumber, hay and some oats. His appetite isn’t affected in any way

he does sounds like an older boy, their nails get quite thick and they do loose condition around the backend and boney hips. It awful when you can’t get a diagnosis 🤨

Thank you, that confirms what I thought. I wasn’t sure if they lose condition with age (as a lot of mammals naturally do)?, which is why I got a vet check up for him. Plus the being lazy, I didn’t want to just put that down to age either.

It may be worth requesting xrays, when my Leonard was still alive he was checked all over, physically, and their best guess was maybe a bladder stone as his legs didn't seem painful. It was only when xrayed they found his osteodystrophy, id imagine the start of arthritis may have similar results. Failing that, a course of metacam to see if it has any influence on his behaviour may be worth trying.

Thank you. They have given me metacam to try him on. I’ll monitor him and get him back for further tests if he doesn’t improve.
sorry to hear your Leonard had some problems, and sorry to hear of his passing 💕

Holly is over 4 and was losing weight slowly and steadily towards the end of last year. After extensive testing to rule out major nasties we established that when she was on metacam she gained and maintained her weight and when she was taken off metacam she lost weight again. It seems to be some unexplained spinal pain that she has. However, she is now doing brilliantly. Is it worth considering a pain issue for him?

Thank you, that’s really helpful. The vet has given me metacam to try him on, so I’m presuming that might be their thought process too? I’ll monitor how he gets on, on the metacam

Banner would like you all to know that he’s feeling much better, that he’s had a lovely play time in the play pen today, that he’s much more active and that he’s now gained 50g! 🥰

We even had a couple of little popcorns today... not bad for our OAP boy 😆
