Took Little Red (Ida) up to the vet this morning as she has started to hoot when breathing. vet confirmed her lungs are full of it, so she's come home with some antibiotics. She's still eating which is a bonus, though has lost around 60g in weight, so I will be monitoring that and will step in with syringe feeding if needed.

Good that you have had her seen promptly; she should hopefully not get any worse than she is now.

Place a bowl of steaming water next to her cage and keep it refeshed or place her in a steamed up shower for half an hour to help ease her breathing; the sooner that is the case, the sooner she will be back to eating normally again.

Thank you @Wiebke I'll make sure she gets some steam to ease her breathing and airways :) So far she is still bright, which is a bonus. Hopefully we have caught it early.

PS: You can also give extra vitamin C during the next 2-3 weeks to help boost her immune system; in a pinch, about 1/8 - 1/4 of a human vitamin C tablet per day will do.

I have some Pro-C in so I'll syringe her extra. Thank you for the advise :)

yes, I was about to suggest you the same... vit C for humans, not the one for piggies. My sow recovered spontaneously after a little eye infection, I only doubled the drops of vit C she usually takes daily. I use Cebion drops, but of course you can use everything you find. Syringe the vit C and don't let it stand in the bottle or in contact with the air or in the light. If you like Cebion drops you can mix them into your medicine or some drops of water. Its taste is loved by piggies (and children).
You have caught the infection in time, therefore your piggie will recover in few days, no doubt!

Sending gorgeous little Red loads of healing vibes. Glad you spotted it early, hopefully she will recover quickly.

Get well soon Little Red, healing vibes sent your way!

PS...She's gorgeous!

Did the vet suggest diuretics too? If she has fluid on her lungs, I would think they would be needed in addition to the antibiotics.

They did mention it but wanted to give her a few days on the septrin first. She's been having steam treatment since the vets and is still bright and eating. I haven't heard her hooting this morning which is a bonus.

Little red is almost through her course of Antibiotics. She's regained the weight she lost and her chest sounds so much better. She's back at the vets on thursday evening for another check to make sure everything is clear, but she has improved so much.
