our Big Coo's got Enterococcus and Yeast infections and is on Baytril. He's had many problems and was on syringe feeding for past 6 months.

He's dribbling all the time, refuses to drink and stopped eating. Sitting there puffed up and screaming out when trying to poop, but nothing comes out. The odd thing is we've been treating him for diarrhea, but he's not had Dioralyte for days now, perhaps loosing fluid caused constipation.

Does anyone know a good experienced vet that works with guinea pigs in London who could put him on drippers intravenously?
he's only 1kg from 1340 and not accepting any food, it drips back out

I'm not in london, but i just want to say I'm sorry your little guy is unwell. well done for seeking veterinary attention for him, i hope you can find a vet that will be able to help him out. good luck to you both.

Aww poor little man, you must be soo worried , sorry i don't have any advice just wanted to say i hope he get's better soon x

thanks. even my husband is crying - we can't do anything, just watch him deteriorating in front of our eyes.

I don't know of a vet I can recommend in London - tried searching for one but not coming up with anything useful. Telephone your local rescue and ask who they recommend as then at least you will know they are good with piggies.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Suzy x

my husband took him to our local vet nearby that we used previously. they aren't guinea pig experienced, but at least they were very willing to help previously. hope they don't do anything silly, although I asked them not to administer any other medicines when putting the drippers.

I know it's quite a way, but would you be able to get him to Northampton? Simon Maddock at The Cat & Rabbit Care Clinic would be the best vet to see.

thanks!
have you ever been there with any of your pigs back teeth?

sorry to hear your piggie is unwell :( is broxbourne, hertfordshire, any closer to you? (not sure where in london you are) you could contact Amir at Vets &Pets let me know if you'd like the phone number x

thanks!

Simon is excellent at dental work. I've got three dental pigs, who have all come to live with me, so they can go to Simon. He's recently started seeing a piggie who had been going to Vedra since before Xmas and was totally unable to eat anything and after one visit to Simon started eating for himself and has made tremendous progress.

we found a good one here by recommendation. when he was under anaesthetic asleep already the vet told me they made a discovery: massive cysts inside of his mouth and nothing wrong with his teeth. the cysts are either growths or inflamed lymphatic nodes because of the infection he's combating at the moment. they removed one.
he's not pooped since then and he's very poorly - makes moaning sounds and collapses, can't walk and looks very gassy like a ball. husband's taking him back to the vet as soon as they open.
just over £600 credit card bill, too :(

took him for cremation this morning8...8...8.... a couple of hundred pounds more on top of previous in vet bills, nothing worked although was totally worth it8.... at least post-mortem showed he was misdiagnosed by every one of the 5 vets that saw him in the past 6 months of his miserable existence:
1. huge ball of lipoma on a stalk in his gut
2. cyst on his liver
3. lung problems
4. massive infected lymp nodes on his head, plus huge enlarged tonsil that didn't let him swallow properly
5. really bad infection in his blood, the results are on the way in a couple of days as they are processing biopsy and blood samples.

all that All Creatures Veterinary Surgery at 85 Lavender Hill Clapham said he had very bad teeth that needed doing immediately and after all his teeth was the only thing that was perfectly fine according to other experienced vets that have been treating him in the past couple of days of his life! I'll be now taking every one of my pigs if they get ill to the good vet which we have now, then taking it back to the All Creatures vet and document their findings; since All Creatures misdiagnosed him a couple of times I'm sure they'll get it wrong with the other pigs, too - this will give me a very nice way of building up a solid court case against them. That'll teach them

and a couple of words of praise about the best vet for the pigs I've ever seen: he knew more than any other person out there about guinea pigs, dealt with problems very fast, unfortunately, it was too late for us, but it's not too late for our other piggies if they become unwell.
Here they are, perfect guinea pig vet:

Oh, I am so sorry :-( In future, if you ever do need another good vet, there is one in Leyton that is meant to be very good with piggies. I've never taken my piggies there, but they are meant to be piglet savvy according to the site-they specialise in exotics, and the staff are exceptionally caring and understanding. I took a cat there who suddenly collapsed, they were absolutely fantastic.

thanks a lot, will keep that in mind. I've got a pig that looks exactly like yours on your avatar. We call her Aunty, because she's really fat and very clumsy :)

really sorry you lost him my thoughts are with you. I suppose the one good thing that's come of it is that you have found a vet who can look after your other piggies x x x

Oh gosh, that photo was when they were still little...! They are coming up to a year old now, and are 1.4kg already rolleyes I can't seem to manage to limit their biscuits. If I leave the biscuit bowl empty, Edward grabs it in his mouth and throws it across the cage...!

ha-ha, very tasty biscuits :) you cheered me up a little :)

True.
CJ Hall is the first place where I didn't hesitate for a moment my late Big Coo couldn't get a better treatment.

Also, after taking him to cremate to East Grinstead (http://clpets.co.uk/default.aspx) I realised this could have been not a private cremation either - from information I found, the cremation services advertised by vets usually burn many pets at the same time and then simply scoop the ashes in equal parts into the urns. Of course, the clients are always told it's a private cremation. Awful.

Oh Hunny I'm so sorry! He sounds such a lovely little piggie, when i was reading all of that, I was having tears! I am so sorry for your loss and I hope your ok!

R.I.P little guy, hope you have a nice time in heaven! xxxxx8...8...

These were my vets for many years before I moved out of Leyton, and they were fantastic. Mind you I didn't have guinea pigs then, but I know one of the partners is an Exotics vet.

However, I've very sorry Piggyologist that you lost your little piggie - devastating for you.

thank you very much, I'm numb. He was ill and on syringe feeding for 6 months. His first emergency was on Christmas Eve when I took him to see Vedra and came back to London late in the evening. By the time I arrived at Vedra's he peed on me as I was holding him inside my coat, it was suddenly too cold outside for him to stay in a transport box on the train. While Vedra was examining him I went to a nearby garden centre and dried my clothes under one of the hand driers in the ladies room, went back to Vedra's, picked him up, he felt he was at home again and peed all over me again :) my sweet little man. I was ill for months after that as travelled back in freezing cold with 4 exchanges and huge transport disruptions without hat and scarf and all wet - I had to put him inside of my hat and wrap my scarf around him, was too worried about him catching a cold. Gave up gym since Christmas for him and woke up a lot earlier and went to sleep past midnight every day for him. Still missed something. Can't believe it.

Whee are so so sorry to hear about dear Big Coo 8...8...8...
RIP Big Coo run free at the bridge, enjoy munching on the lush green grass and dandelions and popcorning thru the meadows, you'll be so very sadly missed by mummy and family but NEVER forgotten xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) and lots of loves from Glynis, Velvet and Onyx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Another little star now twinkling in the sky .............. :(

You tried so hard for him........ xx>>>

oh your poor pig. he's probably dehydrated which doesn't help with the pooping. Guinea pigs are virtually impossible to put on a drip because their veins are too small. All vets should be able to inject saline under the skin (subcutaenous injection) which should help to rehydrate him. Thinking of you, hope he pulls through.
