Wee Boy With Open Skin Wound

hi everyone

Auggie my 1 year baby has a large wound on his neck, i have been washing it daily and leaving the scab to form vet told me to use saline solution, but the wound keeps opening it is too small to stitch, and too large it bleeds, the good thing is it is clear of infection, i am comfused as he has had this for a few weeks, and he has just gone blind do you think these are related.

Wow. I don't really know what to say in regards to treatment or his sudden blindness but do you know how he got the wound? Is he with a male cage mate and have they fought? Knowing what type of wound it is may help with treatment and advice.

If the wound is not healing then i would consider there may be an infection in the wound (even if there isnt any puss there can be infection). It may also be that your piggie has a low immune system for some reason, this could be down to a systemic infection or other illnesses (too many to list). If your piggie is on any steriods then this would stop or delay wound healing. If the wound is in an awkward place where the skin moves then this could be also a contributing factor. Is there another piggie in with him licking it? This would also stop healing.

The sudden blindness is worrying. Sudden blindness can be due to a number of things including high blood pressure and can also be related to being diabetic. If your diabetic then you can also struggle to heal wounds too - may be worth considering.

Best bet is to get him back to the vets to have a check over. They can take swabs for checking for infection, try to find the reason for blindness etc.
 
Abi_nurse has said exactly what I was going to! Sudden blindness definitely needs investigation as does any wound which won't heal. We see unhealed wounds all the time in people and the reasons are usually infection (obvious infection but also in apparently 'clean' wounds), picking/scratching, poor blood flow (a common complication of many illnesses including diabetes), unwanted movement (wounds over an elbow, finger joint etc), poor nutrition or another illness which is making an impact.

He needs thoroughly investigated by a good, experienced exotics vet so they can make sure any immune system disease or underlying health condition is diagnosed and treated. Then you have a chance of getting the wound to heal.

he seems to be a bit better today the wound has a scab it is located on the back of his neck i noticed him scratching it, he does live with his brother, that was my thought that they had a fight, his blindness is an issue, vets again, poor wee man.
