When giving Hamish a cuddle this afternoon I felt a little bump. Sort of where his shoulder meets his leg...it's not big but it's deffinately under the skin as I inspected the area.
I've had it before with hamsters when I take them to the vets due to lumps and they turn out to be either cysts or scent glands.

I felt the other side and couldn't find anything so it leads me to believe it's NOT a scent gland!

If it's not gone in a few days should I make an appointment with the vet? I thought he seemed a little off at first when I put him in the run, but after Robin joined him he was back to his usual self and stealing everything Robin laid his teeth into.
It also concerned me that they don't seem to be eating their P@H food that I bought after finishing their gerty stuff. I need a supply of Gerty to replace the P@H stuff but I got mine at Dobbie's in Edinburgh...Tescos don't sell it and I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to see if P@H sell it in Stirling/Dundee.

Any advice on these topics?

It can take up to three weeks for piggies to accept a change in pellets. You can either mix or sit it out.

Here is some info about lumps; I'm sure that alcesterpigs will have a look in later on.

Thank you Wiebke :)

Well see when I was buying Hamish, I'd already bought the P@H food and then read that all the Dobbie's piggehs were fed on Gerty food. I knew immediatly that it could pose a few problems so readied myself with a small back and planned to ease them into the P@H when Gerty was running out - but I ended up only having enough to do one mix up per bowl...

I have a Guinea Pig hand book and it says that sometimes guineas can get so fussy about their food that they'll even starve themselves to death. Which kinda made me think 'oh no!'
But I've noticed the amounts going down over the last day or so...but not as much as before which is what worried me.

Thank you for the link!
I'll wait to see if alcesterpigs can maybe give me some light on the subject. If there's no change in it by the end of the weekend I'll make an appointment.

I found two lumps on Joey and they turned out to be fatty lumps and they have not grown and just stayed the same size. They were on his belly and are two pea sized shapes. They wasn't attached to anything as you could pick them up and feel underneath so i was told by the lady who seen them.
You should be able to get Gerty from local pet shops as that's where i get mine from or try the tesco brand as ive heard that is supposed to be the same as Gerty.
Try not to worry about the lumps as i know it is a worry but I'm sure someone can answer your worry like wiebke said. But if in doubt visit a good piggy vet just to be sure. :)

Cheers J&G!
I'm happy to hear the lumps on your piggeh were only fatty lumps. This one is very small and more hard than squidgey and obvious, hence why I felt it and thought something was off given that it was a prominant bump over his skin.

It just worries me because he's still so young :(

I'll check the pet shop in the city centre and see if they have it then. The Tesco brand is alright then? I wasn't sure!

Ive read the stickys and alot of people use the tesco brand its not the value cheap one its the purple bag one. I would ideally like mine to go onto nuggets but they are not taking to them yet! They just love the Gerty too much!
Hope he is ok, i panicked when i found joey's lump as he was young too! Dont forget to update us on his progress.

Ah nice...well before th P@H stuff runs out too much I might just buy that then as it's easy enough to buy on my own food shops - that way I can wean them into it better. Cheers!

Oh don't worry of course I'll keep you all updated and see what comes of it ;)

I know i found that tesco said that it contained ec additives and asked if anyone knew what it was,but i found out its in most food and nobody found any other info on it and its been made a sticky but its also found in gerty, wagg etc.

I was away for the weekend and got back very late last night, in uni all day today. I'll give him another feel when I get back this evening, see what it feels like and re-assess it. If it does seem serious I'll make a vets appointment and let you know ;)

What is the size, consistency, position of the lump?
Is it on the outside of his shoulder or under his "armpit"?
I assume it is associated with his front leg?
The scent glands are at the back end of a pig.

After another feel and a much closer inspection - it now appears to be a scab. When running your fingers over his fur and feeling around it feels like a lump, till you go under the fur and feel the skin itself.

I either didn't check it properly before or it has moved on from being a lump into something scabby...

It is the elbow/shoulder area and nearer the back than the front of the foreleg.

Glad that it seems to be just a scab? But I'm sure that you will get a definate answer soon. What does it mean when the lump is hard i wonder?

Can you check him again, please? Is it a scab on the skin or is it a scab on a lump?
Any chance of a picture?

Mabel has a lump now!

My Mabel has also developed a lump (arrrgh its only a few weeks since Dolly had her abcess!). Its quite big and looks worse I think because its on a bony bit, sort of where her back leg joins her hip. It looks quite alarming. But I've been discussing it with AP and, as Mabel is well in herself (very well, she's a bundle of energy, lol) we've decided to keep a close eye on it but leave it alone for now.
Good luck with your pig WW.
