Hi All!

Following on from feeling guilty about my two boys serious personality differences... Last night when cleaning out I noticed a small trail of pinkish liquid. Only Higgins is upstairs (normally..!). I had also commented yesterday afternoon that the upstairs bottle had more gone than usual. Stupidly I didn't take any photos! When I pressed kitchen towel on it, it was a very light brown colour (still wet, and now gone from the vetbed leaving no marks!). Higgins had just come up from eating his dinner, Gibson was still downstairs. I was getting really worried, checked the rest of the bedding (it's light green vetbed), couldn't find anything else untoward.

This morning, no sign of anything, Higgins was super happy as Gibson had spent all night upstairs (super unusual), so they got breakfast up there, too!

I've put some white towels down, nothing on them so far..

What should I do? He's eating Ok, but seems to be drinking a lot more (unless Gibson has been sneaking upstairs for a drink - he gets through loads!). He was super bouncy this morning, and we had a nice long cuddle last night.. Should I watch and wait?

Thank you!

Hi! Take a deep breath! Just keep an eye out whether there is more in the coming days. You are an extremely observant owner, so you are catching things very early on when symptoms are not yet consistent and may not yet be able to be diagnosed by vet if he comes across one of the pees that doesn't contain any blood at all. At this early stage you need to patient and just wait. Keep in mind that some veg can also cause coloured pees.

See a vet if there are more red coloured pees (the red is usually porphyrines in the urine and not blood, which doesn't discolour the urine even when it scores high for the presence of blood) or if you notice discomfort when peeing and pooing or very frequent and/or smelly peeing.

Thank you @Wiebke, sometimes I need telling to calm down!

There was nothing on the bedding last night, so I'll just keep watching for now.

Gibson has decided sleeping upstairs is his new favourite thing - Higgins is overjoyed!

Hi again! So, just washed all the bedding and put clean in, and there’s this... and it’s not Higgins, it’s Gibson!

What should I do? He’s ok, eating and drinking as normal.. am I just being ott? I have only seen this and the first lot the other day, he seems well in himself (he’s just had a gorgeous guineas bath!)...

Hi! Please have him vet checked to during regular opening hours. It is NOT an emergency.
If he is not in pain when pooing and weeing and sitting hunched up with his fur standing up somewhat (typical for internal pain in the body), then it is most likely the start of a urinary tract infection (URI) or a cystitis.

The next step is an antibiotic and ideally some metacam brand from your vet; the latter is not only a painkiller but also an anti-inflammatory. If you wish to, you can get hold of some probiotics from a pet shop if you haven't got any at home, but 'poo soup' made by soaking REALLY fresh poos from a healthy piggy in a little water can be actually more effective, as long as you always make it fresh and the poos are freshly laid. This helps towards bolstering the guts against antibiotics, which can be somewhat appetite dampening as they also impact on the gut bacteria. Most piggies are thankfully OK.

If your piggy is losing the appetite completely or if the symptoms do not go down/reappear soon after the end of course, please contact your vet clinic promptly.

@Wiebke thank you so much for your advice. I will book him in to see the vet, but won’t panic right now as he is ok, relaxed and eating normally.

Thank you again, very much 😁

I agree that he does need to see a vet but it’s not an emergency as there are no other signs of pain or illness. Hope you get on ok.

Hi All!

Yesterday Gibson made a noise like a chicken while having a poop, so we managed to get an appointment.
There were no lumps, bumps, or tenderness, so he's being treated for cystitis. My brave little fella had two jabs (bless his heart, he hated it!) and is on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds for four more days.. fingers crossed!

My little chunky monkey weighed in at 1.25kg!

He was a little subdued yesterday afternoon, but has been his normal self since! Thank you all for your help! :tu:

Well, Gibson loves his marbofloxacin, but hates the loxicom. He has to take a huge dose of this, too - as it's the anti-inflammatory, and he doesn't seem in pain, do you think I can skip giving it to him?

He takes the antibiotic like it's a piece of strawberry!

His dose of loxicom (the cat version) is the 10kg one, so a full syringe once a day..

I wouldn’t stop giving it without the advise of your vet. I’m sorry that he doesn’t like it was most piggies love the taste mine included
