Just arrived back from the vets with two of my other piggies and come home to find Stan with a bloody eye - typical! I've attached some photographs, they aren't brilliant but he isn't a pig that likes to sit still. I've bathed his eye with some warm salt water which seemed to help him as he kept leaning into me as I washed the eye. I managed to get a quick look at his eye and it seems to have a greyish spot (looks similar to a hay poke that Taffy had a couple of weeks ago) but also around the rim seems to have little nicks, I've checked his back feet and found blood on his claws, it looks as it he has been scratching it. He is happily bumbling about the cage and pop corned like usual when I topped up their hay, so I don't think he is in any real discomfort but I've given him a smallish dose of metacam incase

I'm not sure whether this warrants an emergency vet visit or whether it is something I can book him in for tomorrow? I've not had much experience with hay pokes/eye injuries up until now so thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Definite vet visit tomorrow if you can, he may be scratching if it is the start of a fungal infection on the surrounding skin, rather than a problem with the eye itself, Good luck ! :)

I think as you have given pain relief it can wait until the morning. Bless him it looks really sore.

I agree with Poppy's Mum, my first thought was it looked a bit like fungal, especially as he is scratching it.

it looks like the bloods seeping through the skin in the photo rather than a opened wound ?!

I hope Stan is a lot better today, have he seen the vet yet?

Definitely see the vet, though to me it looks as though it's from the skin around the eye and not the eye itself- the skin looks a bit puffy/inflamed and I wonder if the blood is from surface wounds from scratching. Hope it gets cleared up soon!

Sorry for the delay! Popped to the vet on the Saturday, managed to squeeze us in :) The vet thinks it may be related to his blocked tear duct, which has been an ongoing issue since he came to live with me. It seems to flare up and then calm down again as the temperature starts to increase. Taken some swabs just in case.

Although the photograph shows the blood the outer of his eye it was coming from the corner (the red fleshy bit) but he was blinking it away (problem with taking a photo with a wriggly piggy!). The vet showed me with her light microscope thingy the tiny split he created by scratching. No sign of a hay poke which is great!

We've come away with some drops and a small course of antibiotics just incase.

Thankyou all for your thoughts and well wishes and for calming me in a panicky moment!
