I came to clean the pigs out and noticed that Rosie's left eye was shut and that she was leaning towards the left. I got her out and had a closer look. The eye isn't really gunky but it's slightly clouded and the eyelid is very inflamed. She's eating but seem quite and she's also leaning to the left.

I've got her booked in for the vets on Tuesday but I was wondering if anybody has any idea what wrong? She was absolutely fine this morning and last night. I've got some saline solution for cleaning eyes. Would it be okay / a good idea to wash her eye with a little bit on Cotten wool?

Oh and she's also got fatty eye in her right eye. Could this be related?

Bless her. I wonder if it is a hay poke because my Lola had her head tilted and it was shut too. Got her to the emergency vets and was given some anaesthetic in the eye and once the hay was removed she was much better x

Please see a vet as soon as you can. It looks like a painful eye injury.

Make sure that you ask the vet for metacam (painkiller) if he doesn't prescibe any to help take the edge of the discomfort away.

Okey and thank you. I'll ring the vets up and try and get her in for tomorrow.

Please do! The sooner you can get an eye injury treated, the better. They can get worse very quickly.

Rosie's eye is lookin worse today. I rang up the vets but they could only fit her in tomorrow, so she's due to see them at 4pm.

Her head tilt isn't as bad but her eye is really cloudy and gunky. :(

Is there anything I can do to make her more comfortable until she sees the vet? She's currently living with three others, should I seperate her off? She's a very social pig so I'm not sure of this would freak her out more.

Left eye compared to right eye.

There is no need to separate her unless she is particularly distressed or the others are hassling her. Usually piggies are more comfortable and confident left with their friends.

I hope the vet can sort you out quickly as she's probably pretty uncomfortable, poor girl. x

That looks rather quite sore :( It looks very much like a bad hay poke injury and a corneal ulcer has more than likely developed but only a vet can make a firm diagnosis.

Sometimes stands of hay, hay seeds can become lodged in the eye which can be very painful. Is there another vet you can see earlier?

The general treatment for eye injuries is an antibacterial eye drop and pain killer (metacam) but only a vet can prescribe these x

The only piggie vet in my area is busy until tomorrow. I tried to get her in earlier tomorrow but my work wouldn't give me time off and no one else can take her. I've given her 0.2ml of infant calphol to try and help her pain but she really isn't her happy self at the moment :(

I have my fingers crossed for her x

Well Rosie saw the vet today and had a huge grass seed removed from her eye. Poor mite no wonder she was sore!

The vet said she'd got an ulcer on her cornea from the seed. She's been given some Isathal antibiotic eye drops to have twice daily. Fingers crossed she's on the mend now :)
