One of my piggies has got weepy eyes... not just the usual white stuff they use for grooming.

It is kinda like the white grooming stuff but more of it and more runny... runny to the point that it is all in his fur under his eyes.

Ideas?

Could he have some hay particles in it, I'm not sure but try bathing with cooled bolied water.

It is in both eyes not just one and I have looked and can't see anything but I'll try that anyway and see if it helps.

Anyone else?

Some piggies' eyes react to strong sunlight and this can cause alot of milky coloured secretion. I have a himi sow whose eyes always do this if she's been outside and the sun is very bright. I just clean them with cooled boiled water and after she's been back inside for a couple of hours they're fine again. One drop of Brolene eye drops (for humans) can be used in piggies eyes if they look at all sore.

Sounds like it could be conjunctivitis, does it crust up too? Could also be the start of a URI have you listened to his chest? If he sounds at all raspy or isn't his usual self i'd pop down the vets with him. x

Also best taking his cage mate too if he has one as conjunctivitis and URI's are quite contagious, don't panic about either they're easily sorted out once caught :) x

A blocked tear duct is also possible. It may be worth trying to flush the eye with cooled boiled water, and massage the lower corner of the eye gently.

His nose is a little crusty too sometimes but I put this down to his missus squirting pee at him when he is bothering her too much?

He hasn't seemed on top of his game for a day or two but the runny eyes have been happening for about 2 weeks.

Would it be common for these suggested problems happening in BOTH eyes at the same time?

Also, IF it is conjunctivitis or a URI, would it contagious to my other pair who are in a C&C adjoining theirs (separated by grids covered in correx)

I think the hay in the eye and the blocked tear duct would be more likely to be just in the one eye which makes me think it sounds like the beginnings of a URI, i'd take him the vets to be sure. It's unlikely your other piggies would catch it through the C&C, i have one very sickly piggy and the only thing any of my others have ever caught off him was conjunctivitis and that was his cage mate, but best keeping an eye on them all for signs just to be sure. So it's possible his missus will not have caught anything but best to get her checked too to make sure! Is this the piggy who has the soft poops too? x

I would suspect hay-fever, this is very commonly mis-diagnosed as URI.

jnenbnb - yes this may be the piggy who has soft poops but can't be sure as some poops are soft and some are hard in the cage so we think one piggy has soft poops and one piggy has hard poops but can't tell which

alcesterpigs - how in the world can piggies have hay fever?! not disputing you at all but how would this be treated? i can't stop feeding hay can i

I've heard of hay fever too but always thought it was pretty rare in pigs, not sure how it's treated or anything! I'd take them both the vets and get them checked over then, i think if they have an off tummy sometimes they can looked a bit rough with runny eyes etc and also if they do have a URI it can leave them feeling a bit icky in the poop department too. I'd say it probably is the same piggy, best bet is asking the vet to give him a look over. If it is a URI ask them for bio-lapis or another pro-biotic that you can syringe to him with his medicine, as antibiotics can cause soft poops and don't want them getting any worse x

Hay-fever is the common name given to allergic rhinitis, which is an inflammatory response of the nasal passages to an allergen.
They can be allergic to many plant pollens etc, not necessarily hay!
Treatment is to remove the cause if known, try them on Vet-Bed, or else reduce the amount of hay in their box.
Try letting them have a quick sniff of Olbas Oil. Some pigs can have quite noisy snuffling, which, in some cases, can last quite some time, eg days or a couple of weeks.
It is very often mistaken for a respiratory infection and the pig is put onto a course of antibiotics which have no effect whatsoever.

I can only speak from my own experiences.
Lyric had what looked like "wet hair" under one of her eyes, a tiny bit of crusting but no other symptoms - i bathed it & it cleared up the day after.

Hamish (also pink eyed) also gets some crusting round his eyes from time to time, i don't worry about him as he's still eating/pooping normally. However, the time he wasn't "quite himself" & wasn't eating he was diagnosed with a URI & given antibiotics.

Haggis sounds "ruttly" like his nose is congested. This happens sometimes when he's eating or when he's excited. No other symptoms. When i first heard him (he sounded like a train) i rushed him to the vets, she could find nothing wrong; his chest was clear but she said to keep an eye on him & if needed i could go back for antibiotics. I didn't hear the noise again for almost 10 days.

What i am saying is YOU know YOUR pigs. If you think one of them isn't "quite right" have your vet or a rodentologist if you have one check them out. For me it is far better to have taken them & be given the all - clear than not to take them & possibly lose your pig. :)
