Ok, so my guinea pig Leo has had this weezing problem that goes on and off, and it makes him sound like he has a sore throat, i'm guessing it's down the fact I use chipping, which I'm using less of and more hay and newspaper until I find the money for puppy pags and fleese and such... but is it something I should take him the Vets for? Africa has only had it twice but Leo gets it more often. x

I would bring him to the vet the next time it pops up but I don't think its due to the wood shavings. I use them and I have no problems but this sounds like a respiratory problem.

How old are your guinea pigs? Leo has only got this in the last year and he's around 2 1/2 years old depending on the age before they are allowed to be sold. He is the sick guinea pig, but Africa has been getting the same lately and he's never sick.

You really should not use wood shavings nor sawdust for gp bedding.
Their urine can react with the resins in the wood and produce fumes which can act as an irritant to the respiratory system.
Just bed them on newspaper with hay on top, it is cheaper and healthier for them.
Vet-bed or fleece is fine for bedding for sick pigs but is rather an expensive luxury for fit pigs. If you spoil them too much they will start asking for a tv and computer in their run!!!

Thats a problem with hay tho, they'll eat it all before the days ended. Well Africa does, I put lots of newspaper down this time, a little wood shaving and then lots of hay and the hays gone already. =S

I know I am stating the obvious, but you need to put even more hay in for them.
You need enough hay in their run so that they can hide underneath it.

I pay £4 for a bag of hay. That is enough to provide bedding/food for 6-8 pigs for a couple of days.
I spend about £20 per week on hay. I could reduce the cost to £5 if I bought a bale of hay but the quality is often not as good as the hay in bags.
