I’ve had my guinea pig Peanut for about a year and a half she is almost 2 and her weight used to be a solid 820grams but now always fluctuates from about 780grams to 820 grams. Is this normal should I be worried that she isn’t consistently gaining?

Hi and welcome!

How often do your weigh her and do you always weigh at the same time?

Every few days and not at the same time of day

We recommend to weigh and give your healthy piggy a body once-over every week; ideally at a similar time in the feeding cycle.
Weigh can change 30-40g over the time of 24 hours, depending on how full the belly is; the difference between a full and an empty bladder is around 10g. That is why we are talking about weight loss or weight gain only from 50g onwards.

If you are weighing more often, you have to rather work with a weight band instead of an absolute weight to account for this natural swings in the weight. As long as your piggy is within a stable weight band that is within this daily swing, you need not worry.

You can learn a lot more about weight, when to worry and what to do in this guide here that deals with all things weight related: Weight - Monitoring and Management
