I've just been cleaning my piggies out and I weighed Ludwig. I've noticed he's lost quite a bit of weight since I last weighed him.

23/5/12 1108
16/6/12 1035 (but the scales kept warying from 1032 to 1037 so I kept it on the one it stayed the longest 1035

Now I'm worried as this seems quiet a big drop in that time. He's very light. Should I be worried?

I then noticed after I had finished cleaning their cage and went to put them back that there was blood in the cage, or maybe it wasn't? I heard vegetables can make it red? Anyway I took Gilbert out as he was the nearest guinea pig and looked at his willy. It had red all over it. I took him out and wiped his willy and this is what came up:

This is inside the cage

As you can see they both happily are still eating so I'm not sure whats wrong?

Ludwig with the brown patch and the other is Gilbert.

is there a chance the 'blood' is from the cherries I gave them yesterday? I've never fed cherries before and thought I'd let them try. They only had one and a bit each.

Although urine can be discoloured due to fruit and veg, that looks very much like blood to me and the weight loss is a concern.

I would suggest a trip to the vets as blood in urine can be caused by UTI and / or bladder stones.

If you can, try and collect a urine sample from Ludwig and take to the vets with you. You can do this by popping him in to a cat carrier or anything else with a pastic bottom. Wait until he pees and use a syringe to 'suck' the urine up. The fresher the urine, the better for testing.

Look out for any signs of squeaking / discomfort when urinating.

Septrin us the preferred antibiotic for UTI and bladder pigs.

Good luck and try not to worry xx

Your piggies are real cute xx

It's not ludwig thats bleeding. That's whats confused me. He is fine but has lost weight.

Gilbert is the one whose bleeding. It's strange to see the one whose lost weight looks fine but the one whose gained weight (1339->1348 ) is the one bleeding.

Thank you so much!

I agree with Claire - the pics do seem to show blood so a vet trip is needed, fingers crossed some antibiotics will sort it out for him.

ETA - place a poo or two in some water to see if they release the red colouring too- just in case it's from the cherry skins in the faeces.

Sorry for the confusion :red May be worth taking both piggies to the vets then.

This is going to sound disgusting to some but a tip I was told was to dab your finger in a poodle of urine and rub the finger against your thumb. When a pig has a UTI, bladder sludge or stones, you can sometimes feel grit in the urine.

How are the boys today?

I took Gilbert out today to check on him.

As I looked at his bum I noticed it was very waxy and with dried dark bits that I imagine is the poo. I cut quite a lot off and heres a small sample. You can also see he did a poo with no blood and his bum looks quite rough.

He also peed on me.

And it didn't seem to have any blood.

I am still thinking of taking him to the vets for a check over along with Ludwig and my two other boars.

Is it too late to place the poo in water as its a day later now?

Everything looks normal in your latest pics, it's still worth putting the old poo in some water - if it does release some colouring then it will set your mind at rest over it.
