Hi there. My Guinea pig has dropped from 1.041g to 956g in 2 weeks. She has never dropped below 1kg before so I have booked her appointment with the vet to be seen tonight because she also hasn’t been acting herself. I have now just discovered this poos from her. The first picture was stuck to her leg and looks like it has eggs in? Or mucus? And then there are some very tiny poos and then a pile of small round poos on the pee pad. She didn’t get up this morning like she normally does and she wasn’t in the hay tray like she normally is so I put hay in front of her and she did eat some but not at the normal speed as she normally would. Any ideas what this could be? And if I should give her some critical care while I wait for her appointment? I have decided not to give her veggies like I normally would this morning. Thank you in advance.

Hi and welcome

The poos illustrate a major tummy upset, bloating or GI stasis event. You can clearly see the lack of food intake for a period and the disturbance of the gut microbiome reflected in the poo output. The mucus comes from the barrier at the end of the caecum, the last and biggest of the fermenting tracts in the lower gut; it is there to retain the gut microbiome as the poos pass through but it can stick to some poos in the case of dehydration.

Please step in additional top-up feeding and digestive support (poo soup and probiotics).

Thank you so much. So should I syringe feed her some water and what top up food? Critical care? She is eating some hay but this obviously isn’t enough to keep everything moving as it should be at the moment. It’s just to keep everything moving until her appointment at 18:30 tonight. Thank you again.
