Hi all

We are new and this is my male GP Treacle who will be 7 on the 1st November.

Can anyone shed any light for me,Treacle is losing weight at a rate of knots,I have brought him inside this year as he has no fat to keep him warm,he is still eating, not moving as much as he used too,I am bulking his food out with fruit and veg but he now has diarrhoea so cut back a little on that.

He is on dried food also but he is very selective which bits he eats (always being like that) in hindsight he maybe should have been on complete pellets.
At his fittest he weighed about 1kg he currently weichs 575g :( and is losing quite a bit each week

Is he at the end of the road? :'(

Many Thanks

Have you had his mouth/teeth checked?.

Older piggies sometimes do lose weight and condition, but this normally happens over a longer period.

Make sure he has lots of hay and dried grass available. If he still has diarrheoa give him some rehydration therapy.Make the powder up as per instructions on the satchet and give little and often by syringe.

If the diarrheoa is very runny you could give him half a tablet or capsule of Immodium or Diacalm. If he still has the runs tomorrow it would be best to take him to a gp experienced vet.

Thanks for reply

His mouth and teeth are fine, according to the vet his weight loss has been going on a few months but the loss seems to be a bit more rapid these days

Last week 40g and this week 30g whereas before it was maybe 5-10g but then someweeks he would gain weight back.

He has hay but doesn't really bother with it :(

Hi and welcome. :)
There are lots of tips on here, and people are always supportive and helpful.

Have a browse around in Health and Illness, you could find something usefull.

It could just be old age, but I'm no expert.

You could try syringe feeding him, but that may not be good with diarrheoa.

Sorry I'm not much help :( . Hope he gets better.

Thanks

Just searching the forum for advice and have found a few weight loss threads

Awww bless him, he is lovely. I dont know what to suggest really. I would have suggested a toothy problem too, is your vet sure about this?

If he doesnt eat much hay, try buying a different brand. Mine are really fussy. The greener it is the better!

mine like supa forage excel, its from pets at home. it smells nice too.

Well I am sad to report that Treacle has gone down hill quite a lot overnight so we have booked a trip to the vets :(

I think it maybe a possible PTS but will wait to see. :'(

Thanks for all the replies will keepyou updated

I've got my fingers crossed for you too.

Let us know how it goes. xx

Good luck at the vets, Treacle looks somuch like our Harry.
You may just be able to see him on the pic near my name.
7 is a fantastic age.
Figers crossed for you
Anne. :)

Sadly Treacle had to be PTS because he had lost lots of weight the vet could feel through his skin that there was a large growth on his bowel, so at his age we thought it best to be kind to him as the growth was giving him discomfort. :'( :'(

Run free Treacle at the bridge

We will miss you loads x

I am so sorry to hear this :'(
