Is it inevitable that older piggies (4+) will lose weight even if there is no medical problems.? Midge is 4+ and is loosing weight - all be it rather slowly. She recently underwent surgery and while under the vet checked her teeth and the comment was they were in very good condition for a piggie of her age. The surgery was for an abcess so no ongoing health concerns there. She just seems to be slowing down, we are making sure that there is always tasty treats and lots of different forage for her to munch on. Is this something to be expected and any advice on to when it would start to be a cause for concern. We weigh 2x a week and if there is a loss there is normally a gain at the next weigh but not enough to even it out. Thanks.

Hi. from my experience weight loss in older piggies is very common as their kidneys and other organs can become less efficient but would always seek veterinary advise for unexplained weight loss. also i do not think of piggies as being old until they are 6+ so would not expect weight loss in a 4 year old. your piggy's recent abscess and surgery is probably the reason for loss of weight as it can take a while for them to get back on their feet again.
i would keep giving her lots of different foods to choose and start weighing her daily. if she continues to lose weight i would take her back to the vet for a check up.
