Pugwall, our 3-4 year old boar, recently got a new male cage mate, who is about two months old. The baby pig is called Bumble.

Pugwall had been on his own for a few months since his last buddy died. They had lived separately but side-by-side, because the other piggy had a tendency to bite poor Pugwall.

Pugwall wasn't particularly active, and spent a lot of his live eating and sleeping.

Bumble and Pugwall are now in the same cage, which is a 10x2 C&C set up. Previously, Pugwall had access to half of this cage due to cage divide being in place.

Not only does Pugwall have more space, but now spends a lot of time running around and chasing Bumble, which all looks like normal rough-housing to me.

Since we got Bumble though his weight has started to drop a little bit. He was hovering around the 1280-1300g mark and is now about 1210-1220g, but is eating as much as he ever was and has no other symptoms or signs of ill-health.

For context, we have two of everything in the cage. Two food bowls, water bottles and hay piles, and I distribute their fresh veg all about the cage so no-one can hoard it.

Do you think the weight loss is just indicative of him being far more active than he used to be and having the run of a much bigger cage?

It could be that he is just being lively again, his weight was up at the high end. Realistically you need to check the heft of a guinea pig to check for a healthy size rather than weight as, like humans, they can vary so much piggy to piggy
