Hi all.

Just worried about one of my piggies, Tilly. She is about 5 and a half and she is just slowly losing weight.
Up to about 18months ago she used to weigh around 1200g, gradually over that 18months she has lost weight and then settled at around the 900g mark. But recently (within the last month or so) she is nothing but skin and bone and when I weighed her last night she is only about 800g.
Behaviour wise she is acting normal, first out squeaking for food, trotting about the living room. She doesn't appear to be eating less and no obvious signs of illness.
Is this something that happens to guinea pigs as they get old?

Thanks

Just an update.

I took Tilly to the vets last night, he gave her a good look, no teeth problems, heart good, lungs clear, her cysts haven't filled, no lumps or bumps. Basically no obvious signs for cause of weight loss.
So she has gone in today for a blood test, they want to rule out kidney problems. I am very nervous as they wouldn't do it without giving her 'a bit of gas' so she doesn't struggle.

On pins waiting for news.

Fingers crossed there is no bad news.

Just heard from the vets. Tilly is awake and eating her hay!

The vet said that her kidney functions and liver functions are within the normal boundries (which is a relief that there is nothing majorly wrong). He said that her white blood cell count is high which usually indicates an infection. So she is on anti-biotics for two weeks and anti-inflammatories.

Can't wait to pick her up. Just hope this helps her put some weight back on.

This is Tilly after the vets, quite happy considering!

Awwww, bless her. She is totally stunning x) Lots of vibes her way, hope she gets well soon.

Please keep weighing her to keep an eye on her weight. If she is on Antibiotics it can be a good idea to give them some pro-biotic such as Avi-pro plus http://www.vetuk.co.uk/dog-suppleme...probiotic-products-c-5_172/avipro-plus-p-1225 as this will help with any stomach upset that can occasionally arise with Anti-biotics.

Lots of healing vibes to Tilly

Thank you!

Yes daily weighings I think! I have some probiotic so will make sure I give her some along side her antibiotic. She really won't be happy with me keep 'attacking' her with the syringe.
