Ok, so we got Pippin and Gladys at the same time, both at 6 weeks old..

The last weigh in was 20th August and Pippin was 780g TODAY she is 890g

Gladys was 700g and TODAY 720g

How come Pippin has put SO much on and Gladys hasn't ? Should I be worried ? Cos I am ...

Hmm I don't think so, our piggies are all different weight/sizes :) The only ones that are really close in weight are the two older boars. There's a site that has info on about weight.

Guinea Lynx :: Weigh Weekly!

If you are worried though you could get her a vet checked. Maybe she just ears a bit more?

Pippin may have toiletted after the weigh in :) I believe there can be the difference of 25g from empty or full bladder

I think she's asking why one has put more weight on than the other though, have a look at the weights. She's a fatty bum bum lol.

We always call her fatty bum ! My daughter has decided that Pippin is pregnant... :lol!::lol!::lol!:
I will weigh weekly now and keep an eye out on Gladys...

hehe, I wouldn't worry unless she loses weight or seems ill :) We weighed our sows yesterday and Cocoa is only 944 where as Nattie is 1172 lol.

For the moment, keep an eye on your girls. Guinea pigs slow down when they come closer to their individual genetically determined ideal adult weight.

As both piggies are past their fast growth phase now and good weights, I would recommend that you reduce the amount of pellets and serve half to one handful twice daily in a separate bowl to each girl. That way, can make sure that Pippin isn't hogging all and they are not being overfed.

Usually you would see major signs of a pregnancy by now (large belly with moving baby balls) if the weight gain was connected to a pregnancy, but if you are worried, please read our guides at the top of the pregnancy section. The advice I have given you also takes care of the most important aspect of late pregnancy, not to overfeed.

The Importance Of Weighing - Ideal Weight / Overweight / Underweight

weighed them the other day and Gladys is 800g and Pippin is a huge 1kg ! I have cut the pellets down so they get less now...

I meant to ask, did the fungal infection go @artcasper ?
yes @Kerrie74 - Pippins skin has cleared up, no sign of anything now.. her fur has started to grow back on her leg so the bathing trauma was worth it... we are making more of an effort to get them out at night to have a run around lol ! little fatty bum !

Ahh that's great! :D

hehe, I bet they love running everywhere.

We might have a sow with ovarian cysts, but need to get her checked out first before I start worrying lol.

its quite funny cos we put a huge fleece down, a few cardboard houses and their hay tray and they don't walk off the fleece at all... they just wander about a bit... last night i forgot they were out, kids were in the bedroom, and i went in the bath and other half went in the shower ! I got in the bath then thought ' - the piggies are all alone '... they were fine lol ! but i didnt stay in for long just incase they got up to anything !
are the cysts quite big ? Pippins tummy feels a bit lumpy but hard to tell ..

I think they can be all different sizes to be honest @artcasper

I don't know if she does have them, she's not changed shape but her nipples look a bit bigger than usual, she's been loosing fur from one side but now looks like she's loosing it from her other side, she's lost a little bit of weight but she's eating, drinking and seems normal.

The ideal average adult weight for guinea pigs is between 1000-1200g, but I would reduce the pellets amount with any guinea pig over 800g anyway as they do not need as much as fast growing youngsters. Adult guinea pigs only need about half to one handful (10-20g per piggy per day); personally, I go by the lesser amount and rather have them eat plenty of hay.

However, there are huge individual differences between guinea pigs. One set of sisters of mine was 1000g (the group leader) and over 1400g (the one that preferred a leisurely life style, except for when it came to eating) at the peak of their life; my current young adult trio of sisters is between 950-1200g at their own prime.

There can be big individual differences between pigs- at one point, our original pair were at opposite ends of the spectrum, with Linney being over 1200 g and Frenzy maxing out around 900 g. Both on the same diet, same treats, same everything... just different genetics. Take a look at bone structure too... my pigs that ended up being larger tended to just be built larger- broader heads, bigger paws, etc.

i will weigh the pellets tomorrow just to see what they do weigh so i can cut down accordingly... thanks everyone

they have been getting about 10g of pellets each once a day - (well i put 10g in each bowl with the veggies)
Plenty of hay, twice a day and veggies twice a day... I have just been away for the weekend any my 11 year old daughter did a great job of looking after them,.... good job cos her dad didnt even know they had to have fresh water every day ! plonker... he also messed up with my sons anti biotics - he just gave him 3 doses of calpol ! Good job i only go away once a year :lol!::lol!:
