What are baby guinea pigs supposed to weigh

Just weighed mine, was told I should do it fortnightly but I can't seem to find a chart

Can someone tell me if they are doing okay

They are 10 weeks old.

Bubble- 325g
Squeak- 348g

Thanks in advance

Hi I'd be interested in seeing answers to this too weighed all the piggies today and the baby Betsy Boo (13 weeks) is 0.48kg

X

Personally I would say they are slightly underweight going from my own personal experience, my last baby piggies were all 6 weeks old when I got them and weighed around 300g mark and were gaining around 50g a week, at 12 weeks they was weighing 720g and I expect them to reach 1kg at around 6 months if not before, males weight heavier then females bare in mind. As long as they are gaining weight I wouldn't worry too much at the moment, just feed them a good quality diet with plenty of hay and veggies and they will soon gain weight :)

For little ones I would weigh a lot more often than fortnightly to check on their growth. Daily weigh ins gives too much variation but maybe every three or four days would be good. In piggies weight loss is often the first or only sign of illness so if you only see a change after a fortnight you could miss something serious. For an older more established piggy with fairly stable weight then fortnightly would be fine. For pigs with medical conditions or dental issues you would want to weigh more often to monitor just like with youngsters.

I can't comment on their weights as I am not overly experienced with babies but they do sound a little on the small side. Hopefully someone better able to advise on that will be along shortly. x

I agree with the above babies need to be weighed at least once a week I weighed mine twice a week to make sure they were gaining, I weigh them along with my other pigs once a week now unless i'm worried then I check as and when :)

Please weigh once weekly throughout their whole life; daily if you know or suspect illness/problems with appetite.

Adult guinea pigs (over 15 months old) can weigh anything from 800g to 1800g and still be considered healthy; average is about 900-1300g. That is quite a big range and a long time to get there; hence charts are pretty useless. Any piggy with a bad background can still catch up in growth and weight until they are about 2 years old. With a good, balanced diet, your piggies will get there and realise their own individual ideal weight in their own good time. Please do not overfeed, as overweight can pose a risk in operations.

A good diet should consist of:
- unlimited good quality hay (up to 80% of the daily food intake). Vital to keep the guts balanced and the crucial back teeth ground down.
- about 50g/1 cup of mixed veg per piggy per day in as many servings as you like. Please include 1 high vitamin C veg or fresh herb daily, like a slice of pepper of any colour, a bit of broccoli (any part), a sprig of fresh coriander/cilantro, parsley, dill, fennel, basil or mint, a little bit of cabbage and vary between these. Feed fruit and tomatoes only 2-3 times a week in small quantities. Too much can cause sores to the mouth.
Here is a list of what they can eat: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?42-Vegetables-Shopping-List
- pellets (not muesli): unlimited until the weekly growth rate is slowing down between 4-6 months old, then very gradually reduced to the half or handful of pellets that a fully grown adult needs from 15 months onwards.
- fresh water without additives daily

Babies can vary a alot. I'd expect around the 400g mark by 10 weeks but really it depends on the piggy. As long as they are healthy, eating and not bony I wouldn't worry. I have a 12 weeker here - I might weigh her later as a comparison, she doesnt feel heavy to me.

I have a runt piggy here - he's tiny - like a large hamster and I bet if I weighed him he'd be classed as underweight - but he's just small. Then I have one I'm trying to fatten up because after a tumour op he's so bony - BUT he weighs 900g. A decent weight.

The condition of your guinea pig is just as important, if not more in some cases.

Oh no they are certainly not boney! They are happy active girls who eat wee and poo plenty and love to run around
