Hey Guys! How do I help one of my pigs lose weight? I don't have a scale but he looks overweight. Are there any health concerns for them being overweight?

@Gia Guineas tend to look chubby because of their shape.

Before you try to get him to lose weight you will need to weigh him to find out what he weighs.

It's always best to have a scale as weight can be one of the best ways to determine if a pig is ill.

There's a guide somewhere on here about how to tell if your pig is a good weight but I can't find it at the mo. It's more to do with their build than actual weight, eg being able to just feel their ribs.
The vet told me one of mine was overweight because she's 1200g and "sows should be under 1000," but she's very long (nearly 12 inches) and although she's far from skinny I can definitely feel her ribs.

I just got a scale. He's about 1250 grams. Is that a healthy weight?

Here it is, the bit you need is about checking the "heft" which is a little way down the page. Hope this helps!

It's impossible to tell if your piggy is an ideal weight just from you saying what weight he is, as they are all such individuals and vary so much. If you have a read through the link that Pigwhisperer quoted, you'll have a better idea how to judge it.

1250g isn't a weight I would worry about. I have a 950g pig, 1350g pig and a 1100g pig. They all eat the same, but they're all just different shapes.
