My guinea pig has recently picked up a new behaviour. His cage is set up next to my bed, so we see each other at all times. However, I don't fully close his cage's gate, because I often pick him out for floor time and pet him, and I'm not worried that he may try to escape. Lately, he realised the power he holds by having his cage door open. When he wants treats, he pushes the door with his nose to make noise to alert me he wants something to munch on, like veggies and some special treats I have for him. Does anyone else's guinea pig do this?

They are very clever. They have a very special skill of controlling us and making them give them treats and food when it’s not even treat and food time.

We had a guinea pig when I was growing up that stopped wheeking for food when he found a new way to get our attention. We had placed a bell in his house that hung from the lid of house and he would ring it till he was given food. He would wait till my dad got comfortable in his recline and evening snack and then start ringing the bell. My dad always caved in since my mom went to bed early for her job.

That's the cutest thing I've heard in a while, your Dad being a big softy to the guinea pig, and clever piggy! 😊

My son is always good for a treat... they can tell his footsteps from everyone else and every time he walks around overhead they start squealing!

I also like that when the water bottle is empty, they will stand next to it and wheek when I go past. They wait to see me first. I guess they feel like there's no point yelling if I'm not there!
