Hello! So my Guinea pig Luna has been making these weird little noises the past 3 weeks. I took her to the vet and she looked at her. She said she’s perfectly healthy. She’s eating fine, drinking fine, getting exercise. she’s a perfect weight. No signs of a URI or anything. She told me to ignore these sounds cause nothing seems to be wrong with her but I want to make sure! it won’t let me upload a video of the sound so I’ll try my best to explain. It’s when she sniffs. It sounds like a stuffy nose kind of? It honestly sounds like a little piggy sniffing. Could it be allergies? She has been sneezing a bit. And she loves to push her nose in the hay. They literally bury their face into the hay.

You can’t directly upload a video here. You have to do it via a host like YouTube then post a (embedded) link here.

Piggies sometimes sneeze to clear their airways, or if they’re eating/drinking too quickly.

Hi!

If her airways are fine, then it is likely a little hay dust in her nose. Guinea pig airways are very small and they cannot breathe through their mouths. This means that the least obstruction in the airways is always very audible and much more dramatic than it is. Older piggies can also snore a little when asleep.

Crackling or rasping breathing are the sounds you need to be on alert for as they can indicate a respiratory infection or pneumonia.

We do not have a video uploading facility on our forum, which is run entirely by member donations. We's need a wider bandwidth for that, which is unfortunately rather costly. You will need to upload any video elsewhere on a public setting and then link it into a post.

My guinea makes this noise sometimes and I have also been to the vets and they couldn't hear anything. Often when hes done it for a while he will cough and clear it and he won't do it again for weeks

Hi, my boar used to make this noise a lot when he was younger, it would clear up after a little cough/sneeze and he would be fine. He doesn't make the noise very often now which I'm pretty sure is down to me using hay that has been dust extracted.
