Hi everyone,

I have spoken about hay racks in another thread, but I decided to place hay on the floor of their cage to see if they would eat more of it and when I put them back in omg did they squeak. Maybe they prefer that lol

I am just trying to find the best possible way for them, especially when they're in their cage. Also, I have a piggie that loves chewing thigs lol

Also, Bert is much quieter and does not like being picked up as much..is that normal? I'm sure he is happy as he enjoys his time in the play pen

Also, I have just given them their afternoon veggies as I am heading out later, but they didn't seem to want it..is that normal? I have been introducing them to new things each day

If it was my pigs, I'd be worried, but because yours are young, they are still getting used to veg, and especially newly introduced veg. So I wouldn't worry, especially if both ignore it and if its not at a routinely time

Normal I'd say, one of mine is easy to pick up, but hates being held in you're hands, the other is hard to catch, but once caught, doesn't fuss at all about being held
Ernie is easy and is fine being held etc, but Bert is hard to catch and can be fidgety once picked up that is why I don't try to pick him up as much.

They ate all their veggies this morning, but I don't think Ernie likes orange peppers that much. I even gave them half a cherry tomato each (took the pips out) and they didn't want it. They are sleeping atm so maybe they are just tired

I think most pigs sleep alot during the day. They do have to wake and graze because they would die otherwise, but mine are most active from around 5pm til about midnight. Then they start to wind down again

Yea, he might get better, but if not, no worries, it's more about watching them running round together and having fun. I don't hold my pigs much at all or do any lap time much

Mine are most active in the morning and late afternoon/early evening

I agree. I picked them both up today just so they would feel calmer generally and because I need to do their weight measurements tomorrow so I hope that goes well lol

How do you put hay in your cage? I did buy hay racks, but I find they prefer it when it's all over their cage on the floor, but I don't want them eating hay they pee and poo. It is just really bugging me because I want them to be happy

Don’t worry, they won’t actually eat it once they’ve pooped on it. My two are bedded on hay and while it is fresh they will munch through. By the morning though and they’ve pooped on most of it so will stop eating the bedding hay and will move to the fresh hay in the racks.

Would you advise that I should put a lot in their cage and in a hay rack just in case?

Yes, it’s worth doing that.
that is certainly what I do. Two large handfuls of fresh meadow hay in their hutch twice a day and I top up their hayracks with Timothy about four times a day

Ahhh I was putting timothy hay on the floor. Okay I am going to do what you do because you seem very organised lol

I put Timothy in racks because it is a bit too sharp for piggies to run through. Both of my two have already been the victims of haypokes to their eyes, albeit the hay that poked them was soft meadow hay, so with Timothy being in the rack it goes towards minimising the risk of injuries.

Mine have hay on the floor and in the hay racks. They both eat from both. And in their hutch, they have screwed in hay racks which they eat hay from as well. They always go nuts when new hay are put in the cage.

Just done that now! And with the meadow hay I mixed in some stuff I got from the piggie parcel and they love it

Well mine pee and poo in mainly 1 corner, I put a pile of hay wedged in a seagrass tunnel in the centre of the cage, I pack it with a farm shop meadow hay, and alfalfa King. But alfalfa King is sharp and tough, so I'm not keen on doing this with it. I do the whole floor of their cage with meadow hay, everything in their cage is edible, apart from the water bottle lol

I have noticed that they tend to pee and poo in one corner lol and I would love to cover the whole cage in hay, but I would be cleaning so much and wasting so much

Do you change the hay in the cage regularly or just wait until it goes down?

Its gets mucked out with the daily muck out, but put fresh in every morning, when i get home, and before i go bed. Sometimes il just fluff flat hay back up

I do a deep clean once a week, but as they are in their playpen every day for most of the day so I don't really have to clean as much. I spot clean in the morning and before I go to bed if it is needed

Your piggies have really landed on their paws with you.
Mine just get all they hay put on the cage floor and topped up daily. It gets mucked out when I do the cage clean.
Veggies get put on the cage for too but rarely stay there for long.
You’re doing a great job
