Hi folks, my 9 month old sow, Lollipop, has occasionally made the odd noise almost between a sneeze and a quack. Today she is doing them a lot and they are much louder. She also seems to popcorn and contort her stomach when she does this. She has become infected with lice from some hay this week and has been to the vets for check and treatment but seems in fine health otherwise. Any ideas welcome please.

Could it be hooting? if so it would be wise to get her checked again in case a URI is brewing. It could also be dust up her nose though and in some cases can be linked to heart issues but there are usually other symptoms too.

Would it be possible to upload a video on a public online setting and then copying and linking into this forum. We don't have a direct uploading facility.

It is rather impossible to tell just by going on your description. I am sorry that your girl has got lice. Is she making those sounds during or shortly after eating?

Hi Helen, thanks for replying. It is definitely not a hoot, I have played uploads of that sound and it's very different. seems to be when she's eaten and then nibbling in hay tray?

Guinea pigs that are greedy eaters can swallow air when gobbling down their food and are then making some rather strange sounds bringing up the air again; including coughing.

That would make a lot of sense as she's not done it since eating breakfast....she practically inhales it! - and a binge on hay. She's now conked out sleeping soundly in the hay tray in a patch of sunshine! x

She could have heaving hiccups, like shes trying to heave something up (except guinea pigs cant vomit.) my sow crunchie gets them if she has any fruit, particularly apple. My late sow used to get them with most veg bless her. They are harmless, just try and pinpoint if theres anything aggravating it x

Will keep a check on any particular food that triggers it, had romaine lettuce and celery for breakfast plus meadow hay and Burgess pellets. Thanks for reassurance! :tu:
