so, i am stood ironing and watching the pigs.. Gladys was laying down to go to sleep ( morning nap time  ) and i noticed her mouth was going like she was eating something wth her mouth closed... now i have noticed this before.... she was all chilled out and still doing it....

Is that normal ? she can't have been eating any thing other than hay but it just seemed a bit odd that she was doing it for quite a while....

All of mine do this at various times. It used to worry be but since they all do it and all seem fine I am guessing it i just a piggie thing.
The kids think it's becasue they are dreaming about eating chewing gum!

My two do this as well, amazing how long they can chew a piece of hay. Guinea pigs do weird stuff to worry their slaves and keep us on our toes. I was worried about Spikes unusually quiet behaviour so took him to the vet. She said "I think he's the healthiest guinea pig I've ever seen". He was sat on her lap being stroked with a big smirk on his face.

Mine do this too, I think they keep a little food in their mouths &do similar to cows with cud chewing,
Kind of a mid snack - snacktime between snacks ;)
... In addition to contacting the mothership of course! :D

Guinea pigs can keep food in the back of their mouths for ages and occasionally grind it around a bit... it's one of the reasons that sometimes vets have a hard time assessing the back teeth. They just keep on mulching back there, even in their sleep!

I call it 'air chewing'. Mine do it a lot. Funniest is when I've got them out and as I stroke them they air chew, the moment I stop they stop!
Godfrey does that! *stroke, munch munch* *stroke, munch munch*
I've seen them chew nothing quite a lot, not only are they
A. Communicating with the MotherShip
B. Having a tasty snack
C. Grinding their teeth
They're also
D. Using chewing to silently communicate with fellow pigs, to discuss secret plans.
