I wouldn't consider myself new to guinea pigs, however the last time I brought home new guinea pigs was when I was 11 years old! Yesterday afternoon I brought home two adorable abyssinian, 8-week-old girls who I've named Bubble and Squeak, and I'd like to make the whole process as least stressful for them as possible.
Last night after collecting them, I put them in their new 2×5 cage where, understandably, they were very frightened, so I left them be. In the evening I came in and sat in the room quietly, and to my surprise, they started to eat out their bowl, explore and finally find the hidey house (which is where they are hiding now). This morning I see poos on the other side of the cage and that the cucumber has vanished, which can only be a sign that they are starting to settle in.
I also have a 4-year-old girl called Teddy, who I'm hoping to bond with the new pigs.
I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right, as I haven't done this in quite some time! So, as the cage is completely new to Bubble, Squeak, and Teddy, do I put up a cage divider first? How long should I wait until bonding or even picking them up?
Thank you all!20181012_220540.webp

If you look across the top banner of this site, you will see a button called Guinea pig guides - you will find all the information on bonding in there.
I do believe though that new pigs should be quarantined to make sure they are fully healthy before being introduced to existing piggies.

Thanks for your reply, the information on settling in was useful. The lady I picked the pair up from did health checks on them and she told me they were healthy, do I still need to quarantine? (Sorry if this is a silly question).

Yes quarantine is still necessary unless you got them from a reputable rescue. Welcome to you and your beautiful piggies 😊

Congratulations! they are utterly adorable, hope to see lots more of them!

So cute! Congrats on the new additions!
