just got back from a local garden centre and bought Jovi sweet little girl of 8 weeks and while there they had an 18 month old rex silver and just what I have been after for ages for my female rexes, he was used as a breeding rex, so I chatted to thema dn apparntly the RSPCA have come down hard on them yihaaa and they can no longer breed their own pigs or rabbits for resale and I could have him if i wanted , well he was given his first ever name Charlie after my darling dog who died in july, I feel so good calling out charlie again, he loved my cuddles, and has settled in well in a run between two other runs, he also said could i rescue a baby female that has a bd leg, but she was almost dead when I saw her, and was'nt going to make the journey home, which was so sad, but she has put me in her book as a rescue from now on, and will let me know if any come in looking for new homes, photos tomorrow if i get chance,

Aww can't wait to see piccies. Really sad about the little pig with the bad leg, are they not under an obligation to provide treatment for sick animals? I thought it was the law?

the little baby was brought in by a breeder and she said they were not using them again I said I thought it was probably because she was much too young 8 weeks the minimum as far as I am concerned and interbreeding, but she would be dead by now, she really was in bad way, I said can you not get to a vet , but if I am really honest the baby would be dead before she got it there, she said it had deterioted in the time she had put it in the cage and last time she had checked it about an hour before, she was so upset I am not going to condem her, I could see for myself the baby was almost dead, she herself said she was taking her home, but as i knew about pigs thought i would be better which i was going to do so, believe me if i thought she would have made it I would have taken her to the vet myself, but at least any more unwanted will be coming to me, she promised me the breeder will never be used again and asked if i could breed for them as i seem to know the best way, I said most definatly not I keep all my babys that way I know they are getting 100% perfect care,
I said who keeps checks on you, she said the RSPCA have brought in some very strict rules now, and I checked the hutches and they were perfectly clean and used hay and paper like me, all had clean water bottles and clean food bowls, she said the rules are 100% stricter then ever I said good and she agreed,

Well, if you don't feel you can condemn her I am more than happy to >:(

That woman should have arranged veterinary treatment without delay for a tiny ill guinea pig, it's no good putting them in a cage and checking back an hour later to see how they are...that is disgusting but so typical of the attitude of many pet shops. I'm seething. All they care about is profit.

People like this make me sick, I'm not annoyed at you Michelle, you have done what you could.

RIP poor little guinea baby :'(

Are you having him castrated Michelle? It isn't wise to breed guinea pigs that you've bought from a pet shop, as you have no idea of their background. You wouldn't be breeding for quality or to benefit their health and temperament :-\

to be honest the breeders are at fault they are the ones who bred this poor little mite she ( the lady) did say she was not too bad when she took her out of the hutches to put her on vet bed in the back room and thought it was a bad leg but when we visited her together she was obviously dying and nothing could have been done believe me if i could have breathed life into her i would have done so. the lady looked visably shocked and upset, think she was going to ring the breeder and tell them to get stuffed she said no more, that particular breeder is not going to profit on ill and sick animals, I honestly cannot fault the animal centre and i did give it a good look over, I'm thinking of ringing the RSPCA and tell them what happened but then I might not get any rescued from her what to do,
I am not against breeders for showing purposes in fact I have friends who breed and are brillaint animals carers but to use animals like this for profit is inhuman
I am as mad as you are and feel bad for the poor little mite but would most certainly have brought her home if I thought she would have lived that long, I asked her what vets she uses,ánd its mine so might even speak to them when I take patch and artie this week.
no Barbara I am going to put him with my 2 female rexes I have been after a male rex for months after losing Henry, and will be keeping ALL babies born to them, as i explained before, on the Island GPs are hard to come by so its either breeders shops or breed yourself,
I do know he was the owners pig and he bred from him before they were told not to breed for profit themselves, and all babies are and have been fine, the RSPCA told them not to breed for profit and to buy them in, which does not make sense to me maybe i should check this out as it sounds wrong. as the baby that died was brought in, yet Charlies babies are fine and healthy I saw 3 of them for myself,

Sorry, but that guinea pig needed veterinary treatment and it was denied. That's how I see it, no matter how many times I read the post.

Please think again about breeding from pet shop bought pigs. I am the last to encourage breeding, but if it is to be done, please do it to improve your chosen breed, not only in standard, but health and temperament, which are even more important. I'll say no more :)

I am only breeding from charlie because i planned to do it for ages all of my pigs have great temprements which is how I get to keep them as i do, I spend ages in with them and have always done so, and have kept pigs for over 30 years all of my pigs get 100% vet care I might wince at the price but never fail them and never will,
i have not bred from any of my pigs in over 2 years now so am not breeding willy nilly but to extend my chosen breed and have waited patiently to find a silver rex, Charlie was not a pet shop pig but was one of the owners own pets, he no longer chose to breed from because he could not sell them, so in effect was a rescued pig, I've bided my time and could have got a rex from a breeder at any time who breeds on the island but i know the last one i got from her died (henry) and I was not willing to risk breeding from any of them, and totally abhore interbreeding, Charlie is going to be a great dad, when I first got him he cuddled under my chin a sign of a good temprement and would have stayed there all day if i let him, hes also very vocal wheaking away to the others in the shed, and has settled in very quick, Jovi will not be bred from though, in fact only my rexs 2 females and charlie will be bred out of the 35 pigs i now have, so please dont worry Barbara I have always put my pigs first in everything i do, they get the best of everything as my family keep telling me,
